Spelling Information for the Week of August 29, 2016 to September 2, 2016

Dear Parents,

Green Word Study

This week begins our first spelling test of the year. We will be reviewing short vowel sounds,

consonant digraphs, and initial consonant blends. The short vowel sounds are as follows: short

a, as in cat, short e, as in pet, short i, as in sit, short o, as in top, and short u, as in up. The

consonant digraphs are the following: sh as in shed, ch as in chat, th (hard) as in this, th (soft) as

in path, wh as in which. There are numerous initial consonant blends to review. These blends

include bl, dr, sl, gr, br, pl, fl, sp, tw, cl, cr, gl, fr, tr, sn, sk, pr, sm, st, sw, sc, squ, spl, scr, str, shr,

and spr. I will review decodable words with initial consonant blends followed by a vowel and

consonant. There will be dictation pages that will be completed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and

Thursday in the classroom. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly

spelling words will come from the dictation pages or words that have similar short vowel patterns,

consonant digraphs, and/or initial consonant blends.

Vocabulary Study

Our spelling test will also include three vocabulary study words that are from our reading selection, “Henry and Mudge.” These words are drool, stood, and straight. Each word has a two-letter or three-letter initial consonant blend.

Red Word Study

Our second grade red words for the week are each, call, goes, pull, and girl. These words are non-

decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please note that this week’s final spelling

test will be on Friday, September 2, 2016.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
