Spelling Information for the Week of March 6, 2017, to March 10, 2017

Dear Parents,

1st Quarter Red Word Review – (buy, often), each, call, goes, pull, girl, white,

talk, friend, which, very

Vocabulary words – irrigation, mature, bushel, errands, deposited

Green Word Study

Our “Green Word” focus this will be on magic “e” two-syllable words. We will continue to study this “Green Word” pattern for the understanding of a closed syllable and an open syllable. A closed syllable is one in which the single vowel makes a short sound. An open syllable contains a single vowel that is not followed by another letter: she, he, no, so, and go.

Please practice the magic “e” two-syllable words that your child brings home on activity pages and dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from both of these pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more magic “e” two syllable words on their Friday, March 10th spelling test.

Vocabulary Study

Our spelling test will include the new reading vocabulary words irrigation, mature, bushel, errands, and deposited. These vocabulary words are from our new realistic fiction book, Stone Fox. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. RL.2.7

Red Word Study

Our red words for the week will be a review of the words buy and often. Each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for these red words.

In addition to our two review words, we will also review our first quarter red words. All of these words will also be on the Friday spelling test. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics.

Please note that our final spelling test for all words will be on Friday, March 10, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
