Spelling Information for the Week of September 12, 2016 to September 16, 2016

Dear Parents,

Green Word Study

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be the vowel digraph, ea, as in eat, also referred to as a “vowel team.” The concept of the vowel team “ea” may be introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.”

We will practice spelling and writing words with “ea” during class each day. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ea” words on their Friday spelling test.

Vocabulary Study

Our spelling test will also include three more vocabulary words to spell that are from our reading selection, “Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon.” These words are ground, counting, and leaves.

Red Word Study

Our three new second grade red words for the week are white, talk, and friend. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Each student must receive a 100 percent on this new red word list for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade and a new list of red words.

Students who have not mastered the red words, each, call, goes, pull, and girl, will have another week to study these words for a final grade. All students will receive three weeks to master each set of red words.

Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, September 16, 2016.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
