Spelling Information for the Week of January 30, 2017, to February 3, 2017
Dear Parents,
Green Word Study
We will continue our “Green Word” pattern for the week of “ r-Controlled Vowels.” These words are introduced as the three / er /’s or bossy r. The last two bossy r’s will be the spellings ir and ur.
Please practice the –ir and -ur words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “-ir and ur” words on their Friday spelling test.
Vocabulary Study
Our spelling test will also include the reading vocabulary words custard, tarry, escort, lurking, and distressed. These vocabulary words are from our fairy tale reading of “Red Riding Hood.” We will be comparing two of the same stories by different authors or from different cultures. RL.2.9
Red Word Study
Our two new red words will be knew and were. Our two review red words are once again other and sister. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for all red words.
Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, February 3, 2017.
