Spelling Information for the Week of August 20, 2018, to August 24, 2018
Dear Parents,
This week begins our first week of spelling. Each student will have a weekly “Red Word” test and a “Green Word Pattern” test.
Red Words
“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.
1st Grade Red Words: has, boy, her, day, one, from, of, green, again, blue, as
We will begin a review of ten first grade red words. The final grade for these words will be on Friday, August 24th, 2018.
2nd Grade Red Words: call, each, goes
The first three second grade red words are each, call, and goes. Each student must receive a 100% on these three second grade red words for two weeks in a row to show mastery and receive a final grade.
Green Word Pattern
Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be a review of “magic-e.” Students have learned the name of each vowel and its short sound. They have been conditioned to respond to the symbols of the vowels with a short sound and are now asked to change their response to the established cue. When the one-syllable word ends in e, they must change their response to the long sound of the vowel. Students will be expected to apply this information to ten “magic-e” words on their Friday spelling test. Students will be practicing “magic-e” words on dictation pages. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly spelling test words will come from these dictation pages. Students will also be asked to apply his/her knowledge of the “magic-e” pattern on several other words not found on the dictated pages.
Homework:
Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, August 24, 2018, and will include 1st and 2nd grade red words and magic-e words.
