Spelling Information for the Week of October 7 to October 11, 2019

Dear Parents,

Our spelling words this week will include all 1st quarter 2nd grade Red Words and the Green Word spelling pattern for the suffix –ed.

Red Words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

1st Quarter 2nd Grade Red Words: white, talk, friend, which, very, girl, each, call, goes, pull

Green Words

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” focus this week concentrates on the suffix –ed. When something happened some time ago, whether it was a long time ago or “a moment ago,” you usually add -ed to the action or verb. The -ed may be pronounced short i, ( id ), ( d ), or ( t ).

Please practice the –ed words that your child brings home on activity pages and dictation pages. Students will only be responsible for Day 1 and Day 2 words on their final spelling test. I will give 2 or more “Bonus Words” this week from the various words that have been sent home on activity pages for the week.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY RL.2.5

Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

We will continue to read from the selections, Mercy Watson Takes a Ride, Mercy Watson in Disguise, and Leroy Ninker Saddles Up, within our Guided Reading groups.

Homework:

Please write each 1st Quarter 2nd Grade Red Word five times each for homework. Return the completed spelling practice on Tuesday, October 8, 2019. Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, October 11, 2019.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
