U12 Jim McHugh Shield Final

Our U12 boys were runners up in this year’s Garrycastle Tournament Jim McHugh Shield Final as they suffered a defeat to a strong Derr Gaels side on Thursday evening last.

Despite Ian Malone bringing off a great save early on, Derr Gaels were first to score with a fine point from play. The opposition worked hard, tapping over an unanswered 2-1 to launch them into the lead. Our boys got off the mark with a fine point from Oisin Shortall on the 8^th minute. However, the Caulry boys struggled to find the posts despite Tiarnan O’Donovan and Andrew Stuart Trainor showing well up front. Derr Gaels defended well and stretched their lead with two more points. Malone brought off another vital save as a point from Stuart Trainor meant Derr Gaels were in front at the break.

The second half followed in much the same vein with the opposition dominating throughout. Brendan Kelly McCormack and Aaron Hanevy combined well allowing Stuart Trainor to hit the back of the opposition’s net. However, Derr Gaels responded well, rattling the net at the other end of the field. The Caulry boys worked tirelessly with Brendan registering his first goal of the evening after a superb pas from Dean Byrne. The teams traded scores with Stuart Trainor and Dean Byrne on target for Caulry. Aaron Murphy and Darragh Shortall defended well in the closing stages of the game. Ultimately, Derr Gaels proved too strong for our boys and ran out worthy winners.

A huge well done to our U12 panel and the coaches for their hard work and commitment throughout the year. Well done boys!

U21 Championship Semi-Final

The Downs 2-1

Our U21s bowed out of this year’s championship in the semi-final stages when they played host to The Downs on Saturday evening last.

The Downs hit the ground running with a fine point from play as our lads were slow to settle and were guilty of missing some early scoring opportunities. Stephen Connolly set Conor McCormack up for his first score of the game on the 5^th minute. The opposition put their noses in front with another point from play. The Downs then doubled the deficit after missing a goal opportunity on the 8^th minute. The Fox brothers and Charlie Parker worked hard in defence as our forwards struggled to register scores up front. Another Downs point left three points the margin by the 12^th minute. McCormack registered his second point of the game after a good pass from Matthew Nally. Cialan Dollard then drew another one back as he added his name to the scoreboard. However, The Downs kept their lead intact with another fine point. Connolly impressed at midfield as Nally, Alan Daly and Stephen Brookes combined well, with Daly tapping over a pointed-free after a foul on Brookes. The Downs stretched the lead to two once again on the 18^th minute as our lads struggled to find the equalising point. The opposition then hit a purple patch on the 20^th minute, scoring 1-1 in quick succession. Some nice combined teamwork from Brookes and Nally enabled Nally to slot one over on the 22^nd minute. Our lads were unlucky to miss a goal opportunity soon after and had to settle for a point from Connolly. The Downs then raced up the field and riffled the back of the Caulry net on the 28^th minute after hitting the crossbar with their first attempt to leave them seven points the good at the interval on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-6.

On the resumption, despite kicking some early wides, The Downs were first off the mark again with a pointed-free. Our lads seemed to be on the back foot in the opening minutes as The Downs tapped over two more easy points. Connolly and Fox worked tirelessly throughout as a fine point from Colin Murphy narrowed the deficit. The Downs responded well with another point on the quarter-hour mark. Caulry struggled to find the back of the opposition’s net with an effort from Fox being blocked down. McCormack slotted over another fine point to leave nine points the margin. The Downs defence put in a good shift as a converted ‘45’ stretched their lead. Eoin Fox tried hard and set Paddy Sleator up for a well-taken goal on the 50^th minute. Darren Hynds defended well as a converted-free from Colin Murphy reduced the deficit on the 56^th minute. Ultimately, our lads chased the deficit throughout with The Downs accounting for the final point of the game to run out winners on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-9..
