U14 League
Caulry 3-8
St. Lomans 5-11
Our U14 boys played host to St. Lomans in the park on Wednesday evening last for their latest league fixture.
The visitors raced into an early lead after a high ball in found its way into the top left corner of the Caulry net. St. Lomans then pounced on the kick-out and stretched the margins to five with two quick points. A few Caulry passes were lost in the St. Lomans’ defence as they kicked their third point of the game. Ian Malone done well as he brought off a great save on the 8th minute but the opposition were patient with their second shot being on target. Aaron Hanevy then got our lads off the mark with his goal on the 11th minute. Andrew Stuart Trainor took a ‘45’ short, playing to Aaron Murphy who pointed. Oisin Shortall worked hard out field as Brendan Kelly McCormack combined with Hanevy who pocketed his second goal of the game. However, the opposition never panicked as they raced up the field and added a goal of their own. St. Lomans then took the reins as they added four points before a late goal from Tiarnan O’Donovan left our lads trailing by six at the break.
The Caulry lads impressed in the opening minutes of the second half with Hanevy staging a comeback with his opening point 30 seconds after the resumption of play. A good pass from Shortall found O’Donovan who tapped over another before two converted-frees from Stuart Trainor and Shortall left just two points between the sides. Tadgh Baker then reduced this deficit to one with a superb long-range score. However, this was as good as it got for our lads as St. Lomans added a quick 1-1 to keep their noses in front. Murphy worked tirelessly in the defence as a point from Brendan drew one back. The opposition then outscored our lads 1-3 to 0-1 in the closing stages of the game to run out winners on a scoreline of 5-11 to 3-8.
Team & Scorers: Ian Malone, Darragh Shortall, Eoin Murphy, Cian Heavin, David Gaynor, Tadgh Baker (0-1), Aaron Murphy (0-1), Tiarnan O’Donovan (1-1), Oisin Shortall (0-2, 2f), Dean Byrnes, Brendan Kelly McCormack (0-1), Conor Hynes, Max O’Sullivan, Andrew Stuart Trainor (0-1, 1f), Aaron Hanevy (2-1)

Minor League
Caulry 4-22
St Mary’s Rochfortbridge 1-8
Caulry travelled to Rochfortbridge on Wednesday evening last for the second round of the minor league. Unlike the first match, weather conditions on this occasion were near perfect and our lads took advantage to display their full repertoire of skills, completely overwhelming the game home side.
With Thomas Dunning, James Carey, Senan Baker and Roan Sweeney monopolising possession from the outset it wasn’t long before the scoreboard was ticking. Shane Lawless was proving an excellent outlet in attack with clever running and unselfish lay off to the share shooting Luke Buckley, Alan Malynn and Adam Donoghue. Our team played admirable free flowing football with their point taking from all angles and distance out of the top drawer. Some brilliant goalkeeping from the St Mary;s net minder kept his goal intact until near the interval. Fittingly it was Shane Lawless who finished with a fantastic low shot after a great tackle by James Carey at the other end prevented a golden opportunity for the men in green. Despite losing the influential Roan Sweeney to a serious wrist injury there was still no respite for the ‘Bridge. His replacement Sean Murphy, after starring in goals in the previous encounter, showed his versality in the forward line scoring 1-1. At the half way break Caulry led 1-14 to 0-4.
Any thoughts of taking the foot of the peddle or complacency were quickly dispelled, when Thomas Dunning caught the throw in to set Shane Lawless up for the opening point on the resumption of play. Any time the opposition did get into our territory, the central defence of Tom Cloonan and Glenn Carolan was difficult to breach, while the wing men, Ciaran Gaynor, Rory Mullins, Colm Shortall and Luke Hamilton were equally as good attacking as they were in defensive duties. Leroy Coughlan, Conor McKnight and Ruairi Casey all added to the cause when introduced, with Leroy’s superbly fisted goal the highlight of some quality second half scores.
So a good start to the league with 4-19 of our scores from play in this match, but no doubt stiffer tests lie ahead.
Team & Scorers: James Clavin, Ciaran Gaynor, Glenn Carolan, Rory Mullins, Colm Shortall, Tom Cloonan, Luke Hamilton, James Carey, Thomas Dunning, Senan Baker (1-2), Luke Buckley (1-4), Roan Sweeney (0-1), Adam Donoghue (0-7), Shane Lawless (1-2), Alan Malynn (0-5), Sean Murphy (1-1), Leroy Coughlan (1-0), Conor McKnight, Ruairi Casey
Speedy Recovery
On a less pleasing note was the unfortunate broken wrist injury sustained by Roan Sweeney. This exciting prospect will now also miss out on Westmeath’s Leinster championship run and we wish him a speedy recovery.
