U14 Division 1 Shield Final

Caulry 4-10

Killucan 5-10

Our U14 boys fell short in the Division 1 Shield Final of this year’s championship when they battled it out against Killucan in slippery conditions on Saturday afternoon last.

Despite early attacks from Alan Malynn and James Buckley not paying dividends, our boys were first to get off the mark with a well taken goal from Malynn after good work from Buckley and Senan Baker. However, the Killucan boys were just as quick to find the net as they rallied up the field and drew level. Killucan defended well as our lads struggled to find the posts. The opposition then took the lead on the 6^th minute as they riffled the ball to the back of the Caulry net. However, our boys responded well as good play from Oisin Shortall set Buckley up for a shot on goal which meant it was level-pegging once again on the 8^th minute. Aaron Murray and Tom Cloonan defended well as our boys failed to push on, missing some scoring opportunities. The first point of the game came on the 13^th minute with a converted Killucan free. This point seemed to settle the opposition as they doubled the deficit with a fine point from play soon after. Killucan then went on a quick scoring blitz between the 18^th and 23^rd minute which yielded an impressive 2-2, leaving them ten points the good. Cloonan drew one goal back after a good pass from Shane Lawless. The teams exchanged points with Andrew Stuart Trainor combining well to set Baker up for his first score. A fine pass from Malynn found Shortall who rattled the opposition’s net late in the half. Lawless kicked another fine score for our boys just as the whistle sounded for halftime, leaving Caulry trailing by four at the interval on a scoreline of 4-6 to 4-2.

The Killucan goalie brought off a fine save just after the resumption of play to deny Lawless an early goal. Again, our boys struggled to find scores, with Killucan tapping over an unanswered 1-1. A point from Malynn drew one back on the 36^th minute. Alan Lynam done well in defence as points from Shortall and Malynn reduced the deficit. The game went on a point-for-point basis with Malynn converting two frees for Caulry. Ruiari Casey brought off a good save at the end of the third quarter. Tiarnan O’Donovan done well when introduced as he set Baker up for a point on the 52^nd minute. Our boys tried hard, working tirelessly throughout the second half against a strong Killucan backline. Malynn kicked two fine points on the 55^th and 60^th minutes to leave just one goal between the sides. Our boys were unfortunate as a late goal attempt from Malynn rattled off the post, ensuring Killucan ran out winners with a final score of 5-10 to 4-10.

A huge thanks to their management team of Ollie Baker, Jody Malynn, Damien Keenan and John Lawless for their work throughout the year. Thanks also to all the boys’ parents and the large support that turned out on the day. There’s no doubt that these bunch of lads will come back bigger and better next year and have a very bright future ahead of them.

Minor Division 2 Championship Semi-Final

Caulry 2-20

Lilliput Gaels 2-5

Our minors eased their way through the semi-final stages of this year’s Division 2 Championship when they made the journey to Rochfortbridge on Sunday afternoon last.

Our lads raced out of the tracks with a fine point from Liam Malynn after an early goal opportunity from Colin Murphy was blocked down. Sean Fox’s presence in defence proved vital as he found Cialan Dollard who slotted the ball neatly over the bar on the 2^nd minute. Lee Guinan Malone then brought off a fine intercept, sending the ball into Matthew Nally who found the back of the Lilliput Gaels’ net. Our boys then seemed to sit back a little as the opposition attacked. However, their hardwork failed to reap rewards as two shots on goal rattled back off the crossbar. A point from Darren Brown on the 9^th minute seemed to get our lads back on track, with Adam Mullins adding another point soon after. Dylan Lowry and Jack Sheehan defended well as a pass from Nally set Malynn up for his second point of the game. Our lads showed a fine display of teamwork throughout the game as Fox pointed to stretch the margins between the sides on the 17^th minute. Caulry had notched up an impressive 1-6 before Lilliput Gaels opened their scoring account, with their first score coming on the 25^th minute. However, our boys responded well with Nally and Liam Doyle tapping over two fine points after good work from Darren Brown. Colin Murphy fielded well and was denied another goal opportunity on the 29^th minute. However, the rebound was slotted nicely over the bar by Brown to put our lads in the driving seat. Some good combined teamwork from Dollard and Sean Woods enabled Nally to add another point. A late converted-free for the opposition saw Caulry lead 1-10 to 0-2 at the interval.

The second half followed in much the same vein, with our lads doubling their scoring account throughout. Lilliput Gaels were first off the mark with a converted-free inside the resuming 60 seconds. However, Murphy responded well with a point of his own. Cialan Dollard dug deep, kicking two fine points after good work from Woods and Murphy. Both sides’ defences worked hard in the early stages of the second half, with our lads being denied a goal opportunity on the 39^th minute. Lilliput Gaels were then rewarded a penalty on the 40^th minute which was easily converted leaving ten points the margin. The opposition then pointed as our boys were disallowed a goal at the other end of the field. Our lads never lost their cool, with Eoin Shortall and Adam Mullins putting in fine displays in defence. Lee Guinan Malone and Doyle combined well, setting Nally up for another fine point on the 47^th minute. A superb pass from Nally then found Brown who sent the ball to the back of the Lillput Gaels’ net. Neil Clinton caught some fine ball in the middle of the field with a pointed-free from Murphy stretching Caulry’s lead. However, the opposition must be admired as they never gave up, scoring an unanswered 1-1. Points from Nally and Adam Donoghue kept Caulry’s lead intact. Fox tore up the field and fisted the ball over the bar with the help of a superb pass from Dracy Lawless. Nally then kicked the last score of the game which ensured Caulry ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-20 to 2-5.

Minor Division 2 Championship Final Fixture

Our lads host the Division 2 Minor Championship Final on Sunday next. Opposition for this eagerly awaited clash will be provided by Tubberclair at 4:30pm. Our minor lads qualified for this final with good wins over Millmore Gaels and Lilliput Gaels in the quarter and semi-finals respectively, showing great skill and resilience in the process and notching up an impressive scoring tally of 7-31 between both games (Caulry 5-11 to Millmore Gaels 1-10, Caulry 2-20 to Lilliput Gaels 2-5). Hopefully our lads will continue on their winning ways this Saturday to claim a long awaited minor championship title.
