U17 Championship Round 1
Caulry 7-14
Western Gaels 0-8
Our U19s had a comprehensive win in the opening round of this year’s championship when they made the short journey to Garrycastle on Monday evening last.
Aaron Murphy opened the scoring account with a point from play early on. A goal from Paul Hogan on the 2nd minute really got our lads motoring. Our lads dominated the opposition’s kickout and despite missing numerous chances, scores from Oisin Shortall, Andrew Stuart Trainor and Joey Berry enabled Caulry to start building up a commanding lead. The Western Gaels’ boys tried hard and Max O’Sullivan’s goal-stopping skills were tested on the 26th minute. Ultimately, a scoreless first half was in store for the homeside as points from Murphy and Tiarnan O’Donovan closed the first half tally.
Hogan started the second half in the same vein as the first, rattling off a quick-fire goal. Western Gaels then got off the mark with a point from play. The opposition applied good pressure to our defence as they converted six pointed-frees. However, these scores were interspersed with two Caulry goals from O’Donovan and Hogan. Alan Lynam fielded the ball well as he set Brendan McCormack up for a point on the 49th minute. Our boys then restored some rhythm to their play with further scores from Lynam and Stuart Trainor. Ultimately, our lads proved too strong for the opposition and ran out comfortable winners on the evening.
Team & Scorers: Max O’Sullivan, Ben Claffey, Tadgh Baker, Aaron Murray, David Gaynor, Harry Stuart Trainor, Cormac Murphy, Alan Lynam (0-1), Oisin Shortall (0-2), Brendan McCormack (0-1), Tiarnan O’Donovan (1-1), Aaron Murphy (0-2), Joey Berry (1-0), Andrew Stuart Trainor (1-7, 2f), Paul Hogan (4-0)
Junior B Championship
Caulry 3-9
Castledaly 1-16
Caulry and Castledaly served up an exciting battle in round 3 of this year’s Junior B Championship with the homeside running out winners by the narrowest of margins.
Our lads were first off the mark with Liam Malynn converting a free. Castledaly soon levelled proceedings with their effort from play. Some good out-field play from Olan Healy enabled Nicky Killane to put his name on the scoresheet. Some Caulry chances went astray as the homeside sent over their second point of the game on the 11th minute. The opposition then got their noses in front on the quarter-hour mark with two quick scores. A pointed-free soon left three between the sides. Will Buckley and Malynn then tagged on points for Caulry, but these were cancelled out before the break to leave our lads trailing by three.
Our lads raced out of the tracks in the second half with Olan Healy sending over a fine point after 30 seconds. The teams traded points but Caulry struck lucky on the 34th minute as a ball in from Sean Murphy found Killane who rattled the back of the Castledaly net. This lead was short-lived as Castledaly responded well with two points. The game went on a tit-for-tat basis as our lads momentarily restored their lead after Stephen Brookes’ goal on the 37th minute. Once again, the homeside kept their composure as two unanswered points left it level-pegging again. Despite Jack Connaughton bringing off a fine save on the 42nd minute, Castledaly made no mistake with their second attempt on target. The opposition outscored Caulry 0-3 to 0-1 within the following 10 minute period as our lads missed some scoring chances. A goal from Hugh Allen on the 58th minute re-ignited our lads’ hope for a win. However, it was the homeside who won the resulting kickout and worked the ball for a point to leave three points the deficit. Malynn converted two last minute ‘45s’ but the homeside had done enough to escaped with the win.
