Under 14 Championship Division 1 Shield Final

Caulry 3-7

St Loman’s Mullingar 2-9

Caulry and St Loman’s served up a hard fought and entertaining Under 14 Championship Shield Final played in Mount Temple on Sunday last. The visitors played with the strong prevailing wind into the road goal in the first half. The early exchanges were keenly contested and this continued right up to the closing and thrilling climax. Adam Donoghue opened the Caulry point scoring, before Loman’s replied with three. A great passage of interlink play by the Caulry lads, ended in the net after Neil Clinton was given advantage despite being fouled. However, The men in blue responded with interest, scoring 1-3. Then the match took a dramatic swing in our favour, when Adam Donoghue, twice lobbed the goalkeeper in quick succession to leave Caulry leading 3-1 to 1-6 at the break.

Adam again tagged on a lovely point soon after the resumption of play. With the wind at their backs, Caulry were now expected to push for home. However, any such thoughts quickly evaporated as St Loman’s went into a four point lead with ten minutes remaining. Despite kicking a number of wides Caulry did not panic. A huge long range inspirational point from the lion hearted centre back Darren Browne was the catalyst for the recovery. Three exquisite points from Thomas Dunning, Neil Clinton and Donoghue left the teams deadlocked again. Both teams continued to slug it out liked a ‘heavyweight boxing contest’ in search of a winner. It would take something special to separate the teams now. It arrived again once again from Darren Browne. Chasing what seemed a high hopeless ball, he somehow managed to secure possession amidst of a forest of bodies, and as he headed goalwards, he was hauled back. Once Adam Donoghue, showed coolness and maturity beyond his years to slot the winner. Referee Martin Seery’s whistle sounded soon after, much to the delight of the Caulry contingent, before captain Colin Murphy was presented with the Shield.

Well done to both teams on what was an absorbing and sporting contest from start to finish, which could have gone either way. Players on either side were a credit to their respective clubs and one would feel there will be many more in the years ahead with such outstanding talent available. For the Caulry lads, this was an important victory as this group has had some heart breaking defeats in the past, and a positive way for many of them as they finish with the under 14 grade.

All of the Caulry players had their moments in a good workmanlike performance and it was probably their greater spread of performers that tipped the game their way. However, for wholehearted endeavour and leadership at vital stages, Darren Browne stood out, as did Adam Donoghue for his ‘veteran like maturity in scoring every opportunity under severe pressure and in testing conditions. Finally a word of thanks to the management team of Matt Hamilton, Gerry Donoghue, Hugh Clavin, Brian Carolan and T.J. Dunning, and to all the parents for their wonderful support and commitment throughout the year.

Bunbrosna 1-5

Caulry finished their Division 1 All County League programme with a well merited victory over Bunbrosna at wind swept Mount Temple on Saturday last. Playing with the benefit of the elements in the opening half, the Caulry full forward line of David Brookes, Robbie Hickey and Andy O Sullivan were lively and showing good appetite for work and despite some early inaccuracy with their shooting, they hit a purple patch close to half time and went in leading seven points to one.

With Alan Fitzpatrick and Peter Smyth continuing to control the vital midfield sector on the resumption and providing an endless supply for the eager forwards, Caulry were never really in danger. When Bun’ did actually get through, Killian Nagle produced two brilliant saves. When he was finally beaten, David Brookes provided an instant reply, superbly side stepping his man for a classic Brookes finish. Apart from those already mentioned, Ernie Buckley, Eoghan Grennan and Alan Daly were very effective in various facets of play. Well done to the squad on a very credible fourth finish in their first year back in the top division.
