Killoe, Longford 3-8
This fixture was rearranged for Killoe on Tuesday night, February 16th last after the Caulry pitch was unplayable for the original. Despite the constant downpour, both sides served up a superb game of championship fervour football before a good sized crowd and a thrilling draw was probably a fair outcome. Killoe got off to a good start with an early goal. Caulry got back in the contest with a Matthew Nally goal., Thomas Dunning was an effective playmaker, displaying vision and nous, and together with Shane Cleary and Paddy McHugh providing a very high work rate, the multi-talented inside trio of Matthew Nally, Adam Donoghue and Liam Doyle were proving dangerous. At the back, Eoin Shortall and Adam Mullins were rock solid, with Dylan Lowry and Sean Fox counter attaching to good effect, Caulry led 1-3 to 1-2 at the break. Classic points from Adam Donoghue and a brilliantly worked goal for Matthew Nally giving us the one point advantage.
On the resumption of play, the sides continued to trade the lead and just when the home side looked to be pulling away, a brilliant solo goal from Matthew Nally and fisted opportunist effort from the quick thinking Darcy Lawless gave Caulry a two point cushion. The home side replied with a major of their own which got large home following in full voice. However, the introduction of Daniel Buckley, Glenn Carolan and Eugene Costello proved crucial as the character of the Caulry boys was fully tested in the remaining time. Behind by a point four times, but on each occasion they replied. With Colin Murphy, Neil Clinton and the outstanding Sean Fox showing the desired leadership, Colin and Liam Doyle pointed long range points, while Darcy Lawless showed nerves of steel and no little skill to kick two left footed efforts into the teeth of the gale and bring about a fitting climax.

Caulry v St Nicholas

St Nicholas, Wicklow 1-4
On the following Friday, in round two of the Leinster League, Caulry played Wicklow’s best, St Nicholas, an amalgamation of Dunlavin and Donard clubs. As the Caulry bus made its way over the Wicklow hills and into the glens of Donard, Darren, Liam and Matthew were playing a rugby match. However, thanks to the ‘Joe Browne Express Taxi’ the trio arrived for match time. Such was the early influence of these lads, it gives credence to a new warm up technique. Right from the off, the Caulry lads were on a mission and the highly rated home side had no answer. A bust gutting inspirational point from Darren Browne, was followed by a similar effort from the excellent Sean Fox. Two Matthew Nally specials and one goal from Neil Clinton quickly followed. As Matthew returns to full GAA fitness after a lengthy absence, there is surely no more exciting prospect for Caulry football.
The home side tried to get into the game, however, James Clavin proved an assured presence with his handling and distribution. Jack Sheehan showed great anticipation and drive time and again to repel the Wicklow lads, while Darren Browne gave an exhibition of no nonsense centre back play. In addition Shane Cleary and Adam Donoghue were winning and providing quality possession. The half time score read 3-2 to 0-1.
The expected fightback from home side never materialised on the changeover as Colin Murphy and Neil Clinton, in tandem with Thomas Dunning continued to dominate the middle third. Right and left footed goals, points from play and frees, tracking back for turnovers and bursting forward throughout, proved the all round outstanding football qualities of Colin Murphy in a real tour de force, while Neil was not far behind. Luke Hamilton and Daniel Buckley showed the quality of the Caulry squad as they enhanced the team’s performance upon their introduction.
While it’s still very early in the year and major improvements in various aspects of their play are required, there is undoubted potential in this squad of players. With the right commitment, discipline, support and player availability, they can have a big say in the business end of the season.
