Under 16 League Division 1
Caulry 2-6
The Downs 6-15
Caulry made what was the long journey on Monday evening last for their opening league match against The Downs. In what was a typical maiden encounter, there were lots of errors and wrong options taken by our lads throughout the evening. The home side were quickly into their stride with three points, before Thomas Dunning scythed through the defence to open our account with a left footed effort. The Downs replied with three more points. Then a fine move involving Roan Sweeney, Thomas Dunning and Adam Donoghue, ended with Adam coming from on to the ball on the right hand side of the goal and finishing superbly in the top corner, for an early goal of the season candidate. However Caulry continued to turn over ball and the black and ambers made them pay dearly, to lead 2-12 to 1-1 at the break.
A quick goal on the resumption should have signalled the end of any Caulry response. However, our lads are nothing if not plucky and gave as good as they got in terms of skill and endeavour for the remainder of the contest. The introduction of young Alan Malynn, gave enterprise to the attack, and once again the trio of Dunning, Donoghue and Sweeney created the opportunity for Alan Malynn to come in along the end line and expertly finish low pass the diving keeper.
The game was now end to end, but the turn overs continued to mount for our lads and lots of opportunities went astray. A brilliant long range effort from Adam Donoghue off the outside of his foot further underlined his ability, then a monstrous point from distance by Thomas Dunning was followed by a trade mark score by Olan Healy. Other notable features of our play, were some excellent high fielding by Zach Nolan and James Carey.
While the result is disappointing, there was enough evidence to suggest better days ahead, and the decision to opt to play in the top division, will no doubt help player development in the long term, which is the ultimate aim of the coaching team. It is also worth noting that in the corresponding fixture last year, a similar result and display ensued, but Caulry then went on to win the league.
Team & Scorers: James Clavin, Leroy Coughlan, Daniel Buckley, Luke Hamilton, Colm Shortall, Glenn Carolan, Olan Healy (0-1), Zach Nolan, James Carey, Shane Hynes, Thomas Dunning (0-2), Roan Sweeney, Luke Buckley, Rory Mullins, Adam Donoghue (1-2), Alan Malynn (1-0), Pablo Matteo (0-1), Sean Malone, Josh Jocher
Minor League
Caulry 3-14
Millmore Gaels 5-6
Our minor lads made it three wins out of three on Wednesday evening last when they made the journey to Ballymore of their latest Minor League fixture.
Both teams were slow to settle and were guilty of early misses. A point from Sean Woods got our lads off the mark on the 4th minute. A superb pass from Sean Fox found Matthew Nally who rattled the back of the opposition’s net soon after. Two great goals from Woods after good work from Cialan Dollard and Nally enabled Caulry to build up a commanding lead. Neil Clinton, Shane Cleary and Colin Murphy kicked the next three scores of the game to leave 13 points the margin by the quarter-hour mark. However, the Millmore Gaels lads worked hard and sent the ball to the back of the Caulry net to reduce the deficit. Woods pointed again for Caulry after some good play from Cleary. Liam Malynn brought off a good save in goals and was unlucky as the rebound was tapped neatly into the back of his net on the 19th minute. The teams traded scores with Woods adding to the scoring tally. Clinton worked well at the centre of the field and good defending from Fox and Adam Mullins allowed our lads to push on with further scores from Woods to leave Caulry leading 3-10 to 2-1 at the halftime whistle.
On the resumption, two quick scores for Milmore Gaels got them back into the game. Dollard sent over a pointed-free to keep Caulry in front. The game went on a point-for-point basis with Cleary and Dollard on target for Caulry after some good work from Adam Donoghue. The Millmore Gaels boys showed a never-say die attitude as they worked hard to score an unanswered 3-1 to leave just one point the margin by the 52nd minute. However, the Caulry defence held strong when put under pressure with Jack Sheehan, Dylan Lowry and Eoin Shortall valiant in their endeavours as a late point from Nally secured Caulry the win with a final score of 3-14 to 5-6.
Team & Scorers: Liam Malynn, Rian Rasmussen, Eoin Shortall, Lee Guinan Malone, Adam Mullins, Sean Fox, Dylan Lowry, Neil Clinton (0-1), Colin Murphy (0-1), Paddy McHugh, Cialan Dollard (0-3, 1f), Shane Cleary (0-2), Eugene Costello, Sean Woods (2-6), Matthew Nally (1-1)
Subs: Adam Donoghue for Paddy McHugh, Jack Sheehan for Eugene Costello
U14 League
Caulry 6-4
Killucan 4-7
Our U14 boys had a good win in their league as they played host to Killucan on Thursday evening last.
Caulry were first off the mark with a fine point from Alan Malynn. The Killucan boys worked hard and rattled the back of the Caulry net on the 5th minute to take the lead. Our boys found it hard to place the post and were guilty of some wides. However, another point from Malynn helped to get Caulry back on track. Caulry took the lead for a second time when Malynn sent the ball to the back of the Killucan net on the 13th minute. Senan Baker played well up front as Alan Lynam and Tom Cloonan defended strong. Well-taken goals from Shane Lawless and Joey Berry allowed our boys to build up a commanding lead. However, the Killucan boys kicked two unanswered points to leave Caulry leading 3-2 to 1-2 at the break.
Caulry got off to a great start early in the second half with a goal from Malynn after a good pass from James Buckley. Our boys began to dominate proceedings with a converted-penalty and goal from Malynn and Buckley. Killucan pointed to reduce the deficit as Ruairi Casey brought off some great saves in goal. Lawless added to the scoring tally to stretch Caulry’s lead on the 43rd minute. However, our boys seemed to sit back and let the opposition back into the game as Killucan rallied on to score an unanswered 2-3. A point from Sean Murphy on the 56th minute left six points between the sides. Despite some good defending from Alex Grinko and Harry Stuart Trainor, the Killucan boys hit the back of the Caulry net late in the game which left just three points the margin at the fulltime whistle on a scoreline of 6-4 to 4-7.
Team & Scorers: Ruairi Casey, Ben Claffey, Sean Murphy (0-1), Alex Grinko, Alan Lynam, Tom Cloonan, Harry Stuart Trainor, Shane Lawless (1-1), Conor Paul, Paul Hogan, Senan Baker, Joey Berry (1-0), Adam Dunning, Alan Malynn (3-2), James Buckley (1-0)
