Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 2-3
St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge 0-13
Our Division 2 ACFL side started their league campaign with a loss on a sunny Friday evening last when they made the journey to St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge.
It was our lads who made the best start to the game when Gary Flanagan got a vital touch on a ball in from Damien Dolan and hit the back of the St. Mary’s net. Our lads then pounced on the following kickout, with Andy O’Sullivan putting us four points the good. Despite the promising start, the Caulry lads failed to push on from here with a fine point for the Bridge getting them off the mark on the 9th minute. St. Mary’s began to take the control of the game, although they only picked off half their chances with three points drawing level on the 24th minute. Cillian Nagle brought off a good save late in the half as St. Mary’s added one point just before the break to lead by the narrowest of margins at half time.
The second half followed in much the same vein as the first, with our lads impressing from the start. Flanagan again getting his magic touch on a ball in from Emmet Nally and pocketing another goal. Loughlin Casey sent over a point on the 35th minute and we were in front by three. St. Mary’s responded well as they kicked two consecutive points on the 42nd and 44th minute to keep in touching distance of the lead. Caulry struggled somewhat against a packed Bridge defence, with Dolan sending over the next score of the game after a patient build-up. However, two St. Mary’s points either side of the water break saw them draw level with 10 minutes to play. The homeside found momentum in the closing stages of the game, notching up four unanswered points to secure the win on a scoreline of 0-13 to 2-3.

Division 4 ACFL
Caulry 3-10
The Downs 2-11
Our Division 4 ACFL side got off to a winning start in their opening league clash against The Downs on the following Saturday evening in the park.
Early points from the Malynn brothers got Caulry motoring. This lead was short-lived as The Downs got to terms with their conditions and tagged on three unanswered points from play. Shane Lawless made his mark on the game as his levelled on the 12th minute. Lawless then edged Caulry in front with another fine point from play despite being surrounded by a black & amber defence. These scores were soon cancelled out with two points from play for The Downs. A lovely move up the field through Lawless and Rory Mullins was finished by Liam Malynn. Liam then put Caulry in the driving seat as he riffled the back of The Downs’ net after finding a pass from Sean Doyle. Liam rounded off the first half scoring with a ‘45’ to leave the homeside leading 1-6 to 0-5.
The Downs drew one back courtesy of an advanced mark moments after the resumption of play. Alan Malynn showed great vision on the 34th minute as he took a quick-free, finding Lawless who sent the ball to the back of the opposition’s net. Despite another point from Alan putting our lads seven points in front, The Downs were never going to lie down as they notched up an unanswered 1-2. Between the 42nd and 50th minute, The Downs outscored Caulry 0-3 to 0-1 and drew level. Scores from Liam and Gary Flanagan edged our lads in front momentarily. Jack Connaughton was unlucky as despite bringing off a fine save, The Downs made no mistake on the second chance of asking, rattling the back of the net and sneaking into the lead by the bare minimum. The Caulry lads dug deep late in the game. Glenn Carolan worked tirelessly in defence as a high ball in from Doyle was picked from the sky and finished to the net by Alan Malynn. Our lads had done enough to see out the win on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-11.
