Sympathies
It was with great sadness and regret that we learned of death of Nan Hanevy recently. Nan was a dedicated supporter of the GAA and for many years, she travelled both far and wide to see Caulry and Westmeath play. Her predeceased husband Joe was also a stalwart member of the club, both on and off the field as a player and serving on different committees.
Many an evening Nan spent down pitch-side, proudly watching her grandchildren play and just last October, she witnessed her grandson, Aaron claim his first championship title with the club for his contribution to the U14 squad.
The club extends its deepest sympathies to the Hanevy family, Mount Temple at this time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
Dinner Dance
The Caulry faithful travelled in large numbers to the Hodson Bay Hotel last Saturday to bring down the curtain on a successful 2019 season. The packed crowed was welcomed by MC Colin White and heard from various speakers on the night including vice-chairman of the county board Frank Mescall, club chairman James Casey, chairman of the ladies board Hugh Gaynor, special guest and RTÉ commentator Marty Morrissey and impressionist Aidan Tierney.
James Casey was first to take to the stage as he welcomed all on this an important night for the club. He congratulated the three teams for their respective successes and spoke about the importance of celebrating these rare nights. He thanked the hotel and staff for the fine food and service and invited guests to partake in a moments silence for those who could not be there on the night.
Frank Mescall was then invited to speak on behalf of the county board. He extended congratulations to the three teams and acknowledged the contributions of our club to GAA in the county. He also praised the astonishing development of our club in recent years, stating it was a credit to all involved.
Hugh Gaynor was then invited to speak on behalf of the ladies. Hugh praised the hard work of the ladies teams and acknowledged their multiple successes in recent years. He also commended the club for its efforts in ensuring both the lads and ladies side continue to flourish as one.
Marty Morrissey then took to the stage as he presented the medals to the ladies who won the Division 4 League and to the lads who won the Intermediate Championship. On the night, the members of the intermediate championship winning 1969 team were also honoured, commemorating 50 years since we claimed our first intermediate title.
Marty Morrissey then spoke a few words. He stated the importance of passion for club and parish as a driving force of any successful GAA club and team. Wishing the club the very best of luck but the future, he stated he would be keeping an eye on results as we make the return to senior ranks.
Marty then invited impressionist Aidan Tierney to the stage where the crowd were entertained by hearing exclusive interviews from stars including Davie Fitz, Colm O’Rourke and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
Colin White then concluded formalities by extending thanks to all involved in organising the night, the hotel staff and special guests and the celebrations then continued into the early hours.
Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 2-12
Milltownpass 1-8
This first League match was switched to Caulry on Saturday last due to the Milltownpass pitch being unplayable. The home side took full advantage to annex the 2 league points on offer. Despite the swirling breeze, both teams strived to play a possession game. Adam Donoghue opened the scoring in the first attack. Andy Sullivan, Paddy Sleator and Colin Murphy followed suite with well taken points. Then the young trio of Thomas Dunning, Adam Donoghue and Luke Buckley combined for an expertly palmed goal by debutant Luke.
Caulry half backs, Midfield and half forward lines were dominating possession and Milltownpass were relining on sporadic break outs. Nevertheless they looked dangerous on these occasions. At the break Caulry led 1-11 to 1-4.
With Stephen Connolly showing why he was part of the Westmeath senior panel recently, Caulry continued to dominate but in the difficult conditions failed to capitalise fully on the scoreboard. Colin Murphy did well to finish to the net and in the end, while they will be happy with the win much improvement will be needed in the coming weeks and months.
With an eye to a promising future Caulry had three players, Luke Buckley, Glenn Carolan and Roan Sweeney making taking their adult bow.
