JFC Round 1
Caulry 3-13
Moate 2-5
Our juniors made a winning start to their championship campaign when they travelled to Kilbeggan to take on Moate on a wet and windy Friday evening last.
Playing against the conditions in the opening half, things quickly went from bad to worse as Moate shot for two quick-fire goals in as many minutes after throw-in. Efforts from Liam Malynn and Shane Lawless proved unsuccessful before Malynn got our lads off the mark on the 5th minute with his point from play. A good passage of play through Hugh Allen and Adam Donoghue was finished by Malynn to further narrow the deficit. Glenn Carolan then sent in a dangerous ball to Gary Flanagan but Flanagan couldn’t quite get a touch to it as the opposition raced down the field and sent over their first point. Will Buckley done well under the breaking ball as he set Thomas Dunning up for a point on the 11th minute. Both sides struggled to grasp the tough conditions as a few chances went astray as the sides shared a point apiece inside the following 10 minutes. Once again, Moate went on the hunt for a goal, with an effort on the 23rd minute being well-intercepted by Carolan with this centre-back making a move up the field and finishing with a point. The sides were level moments later when Flanagan rattled the back of the Moate net after an initial shot from Malynn was saved. Late in the half another goal chance (this time from Lawless) was blocked and knocked out for a ‘45’, which was dutifully converted by the younger of the Malynn brothers to leave our lads leading by one at the interval.
It was Caulry who made a very promising start to the second half with two goal chances, only one of which resulted in a score. Firstly, a high ball in from Alan Malynn failed to pay dividends before his brother Liam’s shot was helped over the bar by the Moate goalie. Ciaran Allen and Olan Healy worked hard in the Caulry defence as a Moate effort went wide of its target. Adam Donoghue then sent a superb ball into Flanagan who made no mistake in riffling the net for his second goal of the game. Points from Sean Murphy and Liam Malynn soon had Caulry seven points the good. Moate kicked two good scores on the 44th and 45th minutes. However, our lads were not phased as a good passage of play from Buckley set Rory Mullins up for a goal just before the water-break. The Caulry defence worked hard under the pressure from Moate, holding the opposition scoreless as points from Alan Malynn and Donoghue stretched the Caulry lead. The teams traded scores on the 55th and 57th minutes, with Nicky Killane on target for Caulry. A late converted-free from Liam Malynn rounded off the scoring tally as our lads deservedly ran out winners with eleven points to spare.

Senior Championship Round 1
Caulry 3-7
Shandonagh 3-12
Our seniors failed to pick up points in their opening round clash of this year’s SFC when they battled it out against Shandonagh in Cusack Park on a sunny Sunday afternoon last.
Shandonagh were first to get motoring with three early shots, two of which fell short into Cillian Nagle’s hands and one on target for a point from play. Robbie Hickey soon levelled the game with Caulry’s opening score but this was soon cancelled out as the opposition worked the ball from the kickout and finished with a point. We were then dealt a blow when Hickey was forced to retreat to the sideline after 6 minutes due to an injury. Despite this blow, it was Caulry who kicked the next two scores of the game. Andy O’Sullivan added a point before a dangerous ball in from Sean Fox was helped into the back of the Shandonagh net by Paddy Sleator. The teams then traded points on the 9th and 10th minutes. However, our lads failed to push on for the remainder of the half as Shandonagh launched their comeback. A converted-free for the men in blue narrowed the gap to two and this deficit was soon reversed to put them one point the good as they riffled the back of the Caulry net on the 19th minute. Two further Shandonagh points doubled their lead before O’Sullivan sent over his second score of the game. The opposition’s forwards applied pressure to our defence as they found space and registered goal no. 2 of the evening. A late converted-free from Conor McCormack left our las trailing 2-6 to 1-5 at the break.
Despite playing all the second half with only 14 men, it was Shandonagh who impressed most throughout. An early pointed-free monetarily stretched their lead to five. Senan Baker then got lucky at the other end of the field as he drew on a loose ball and hit the back of the opposition’s net. Shandonagh must be credited as they responded in style, once again punching holes in our defence and finishing with a goal to reinstate their five-point lead. Points from McCormack and Kevin Maguire reduced the gap to three by the end of the third quarter. Shandonagh kicked four unanswered points between the 47th and 55th minutes as our lads struggled to convert their chances. Baker combined with Sleator for a goal late in the half but Shandonagh raced up the field and finished with a point for play to run out worthy winners on a scoreline of 3-12 to 3-7.
