Caulry 8-9

Tyrrellspass 2-13

Our juniors had a good win over Tyrrellspass in the second round of this year’s championship in the park on Tuesday evening last.

Both sides were slow to settle with both goalies dealing well shots falling short. Harry Hughes opened the scoring tally after Alan Daly recycled the ball well. Tyrrellspass then levelled proceedings on the 5^th minute. Peter Smyth registered Caulry’s first goal of the evening after some more fine work from Daly. The Tyrrellspass goalie brought off a good save as his side drew one back at the other end of the field. Liam Malynn put Caulry in the driving seat with his goal on the 10^th minute after some nice combined teamwork from Hughes, Daly and Colin Murphy outfield. Despite some tenacious defending from Sean Fox and Ernie Buckley, the opposition kicked the next two scores of the game. However, Malynn kept Caulry’s lead intact as he converted a free. A superb pass from Smyth then found Andy O’Sullivan who rattled the opposition’s net for his first goal of the evening. Cillian Nagle brought off a brace of saves between the 17^th and 23^rd minute as Tyrrellspass tagged on two points. Further scores from Smyth, O’Sullivan and Malynn saw Caulry lead 4-4 to 0-7 at the halftime whistle.

A fine kickout from Nagle was brilliantly worked up the field through Stephen Brookes, Hughes and Malynn setting O’Sullivan up for his hattrick soon after the resumption of play. O’Sullivan then combined well with Murphy enabling him to send the ball to the back of the Tyrrellspass net. The teams exchanged points with Daly adding one for Caulry. Fox and Brookes slotted over the next two scores of the game. The opposition then dug deep and registered an unanswered 2-2 to reduce the deficit between the sides. A fine point from Smyth settled Caulry somewhat as Stephen Connolly fielded the ball well setting O’Sullivan up for his fourth goal of the game. Tyrrellspass responding well by raising two white flags. Good work from Gary Flanagan late in the game enabled Brookes and Connolly to two late scores to secure our lads the win.

U14 Championship

Caulry 3-15

St. Michaels 7-8

Our U14 boys suffered a defeat in their championship campaign on Thursday evening last when they hosted St. Michaels.

Our lads hit the ground running with four quick points courtesy of Aaron Murray, Tiarnan O’Donovan, Andrew Stuart Trainor and Alan Lynam. St. Michaels got off the mark with a well-taken goal on the 5^th minute. Our boys responded well with O’Donovan and Paul Hogan tagging over points. A good pass from Harry Stuart Trainor found Tadgh Baker who stretched Caulry’s lead to four. O’Donovan blocked the ball down well in the Caulry defence. However, the resulting 45 dropped short and was nicely slotted into the back of the Caulry net. The teams exchanged scores with Lynam on target. St. Michaels then put their noses in front as they converted a penalty on the 13^th minute. The teams then traded goals with Baker impressing for Caulry. Michael McDonald defended well as Hogan settled for a point after his penalty attempt was well blocked down by the St. Michaels’ goalie. The visitors then outscored our lads 2-3 to 0-2 to lead at the break.

Andrew Stuart Trainor drew one back with his converted-free early in the second half. Despite some good defending from Aaron Murphy and Harry Stuart Trainor, St. Michaels kicked the next score of the game. A brace of goals for both sides the followed with Andrew Stuart Trainor adding one for Caulry after a fine pass from Conor Hynes. The game went on a point for point basis with O’Donovan and Joey Berry on target for Caulry. Ultimately, the opposition had done enough as a late goal from Brendan Kelly McCormack saw Caulry trail 3-15 to 7-8 at fulltime.

Caulry 5-9

Athlone 2-8

Our U16 boys had a good win over Athlone on Friday evening last.

The Caulry boys got off the mark after Roan Sweeney floated the ball into the top corner of the Athlone net. Athlone then pointed before both sides missed some scoring chances and exchanged wides. A converted-free from Alan Malynn left three points the margin by the 10^th minute. A fine pass from Shane Lawless found James Carey who rattled the back of the Athlone net. The opposition struggled up front as points from Carey and James Buckley stretched the Caulry lead. Buckley and Senan Baker registered two quick goals as Ruiari Casey brought off a fine save at the other end of the field. Athlone tried hard and tagged on a quick 1-2 to reduce the deficit. However, late scores from Baker and Malynn saw Caulry lead 5-5 to 1-3 at the halftime whistle.

Despite Leroy Coughlan and Olan Healy carrying out a brace of fine blocks early in the second half, Athlone managed to sneak a goal. The teams then traded frees with Malynn on target for Caulry. Our lads struggled to get going throughout the second half with a number of scoring opportunities going astray as Athlone kicked three unanswered points. Late scores from Luke Buckley and Malynn meant Caulry ran out deserving winners on the evening.

Caulry 2-8

Shandonagh 3-10

Caulry and Shandonagh served up an exciting encounter in the opening round of this year’s IFC in Hogan Park on Saturday evening last.

The opposition raced out of the tracks with a fine point inside the opening 60 seconds. Our lads struggled to get off the mark as another Shandonagh point left them two points clear. Andy O’Sullivan kicked Caulry’s first score of the evening on the 6^th minute after a fine pass from Eoghan Grennan enabled him to riffle the back of the Shandonagh net. The Fox brothers worked hard in defence as points from Alan Daly and Sean Clinton left Caulry three points the good. Shandonagh fielded the ball well as their hard worked enabled them to draw one back on the 12^th minute. The opposition then edged in front as they hit the back of the Caulry net after an initial shot came back off the crossbar. The teams exchanged points with O’Sullivan and Cialan Dollard on target for Caulry. A late converted-free from Colin Murphy left it level pegging on 1-5 apiece at the interval.

The Caulry lads hit the ground running early in the second half with a well-taken goal from O’Sullivan putting them in the lead. However, the opposition responded well by tapping over two fine points. Stephen Connolly stretched the margins between the sides after tenacious defending from Damien Dolan. The opposition worked tirelessly and got their noses in front with a converted-penalty at the end of the third quarter. Harry Hughes made a burst up the field and sent over the equalising point before the opposition kicked the next two scores of the game. The teams traded points late in the half. Ultimately, Shandonagh worked tirelessly throughout the second half as a late goal sealed the win on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-8.
