Division 4 ACFL

Caulry 4-21

Athlone 4-12

Caulry and Athlone served up an exciting encounter on Tuesday evening last in their latest Division 4 ACFL outing.

Caulry raced out of the tracks with a well taken goal from Sean Clinton. The teams traded scores, with Mark Fitzpatrick and Conor McCormack on target. Our lads kicked the next four scores on the game with Alan Daly, McCormack and Ben Moran adding to the scoring tally. Michael Carroll brought off a good save in goals as the ball was brilliantly worked up the field and tapped over the bar by McCormack. Harry Hughes pointed on the quarter-hour mark. An Athlone point narrowed the margins. However, our lads pushed on with some good-combined teamwork and points from Clinton and James Daly. Athlone responded with three unanswered points to narrow the deficit. Our lads pushed on, playing patches of fine football, with a brace of points from Fitzpatrick and Clinton. Pat Buckley rattled the back of the opposition’s net on the 25^th minute. Keith McMenamin soon followed suit with another goal. However, the opposition worked hard and sent the ball to the back of the Caulry net. A point from Clinton late in the half left the scoreboard reading 3-14 to 1-7 at the interval.

On the resumption, a point from Alan Daly stretched Caulry’s lead. However, the opposition began to dominate proceedings with 1-1 in quick succession. Buckley defended well as a Clinton point kept our lads in front. Athlone hit the back of the Caulry net for a third time on the 40^th minute. The game went on a point-for-point basis as Moran, Clinton and Hughes tapped over some fine scores. Another Athlone goal left just five points between the sides. However, our lads worked tirelessly throughout as Alan Carroll rattled the back of the Athlone net after some good fielded from Stephen Connolly. The teams traded scores as Clinton and Daniel Seery pointed for Caulry to secure our lads the win on a scoreline of 4-21 to 4-12.

Junior Championship

Mullingar Shamrocks 2-7

Caulry suffered their second defeat of this year’s JFC as they made the journey to Springfield on Friday last.

Shamrocks were first off the mark with a superb point from play. Mark Fitzpatrick soon followed suit as he pointed on the 4^th minute. A Gary Flanagan point put Caulry in front. However, the opposition worked hard and kicked the next two scores of the game. A superb pass from Alan Carroll found Daniel Seery who pointed to level the game. The teams traded scores with Seery and Stephen Woods adding to the scoring tally. However, the all-important score of the evening came as the opposition rattled the back of the Caulry net on the quarter-hour mark. Shamrocks pushed on with another well-taken goal to put five points between the sides. Gavin Byrne pointed just before the interval to leave Caulry trailing 2-4 to 0-6.

The opposition raced out of the tracks again in the second half with two quick points. James Pettit narrowed the margins on the 36^th minute. However, the Mullingar men defended well as our lads searched desperately for a score. The Caulry defence also held strong with Jack O’Meara and Pat Buckley having impressive displays. Byrne worked hard and pointed on the 28^th minute. The opposition soon followed suit with a pointed-free. Ultimately, our lads chased the deficit throughout as Mullingar Shamrocks ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-8.

Egan Cup Final

Caulry 3-10

Castledaly 2-11

Caulry played host to Castledaly on Saturday evening last for our own local tournament and ran out winners on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-11.

Caulry hit the ground running with a well-taken goal from Robbie Hickey. The teams traded scores with Alan Daly on target for the homeside. Castledaly levelled proceedings with a goal on the 5^th minute. However, a superb pass from Eoin Fox found Stephen Connolly who rattled the back of the Castledaly net. Hickey stretched Caulry’s lead with a point from play. Another pointed-free for Castledaly narrowed the deficit. Sean Doyle fielded well which enabled Hickey to tap over another fine point. Further points from Damien Dolan and Hickey meant Caulry lead 2-5 to 1-3 at the interval.

On the resumption, a Castledaly point reduced the deficit. Some great combined teamwork from Connolly and Fox allowed Gavin Byrne to send the ball to the back of the net. The teams exchanged scores with Daly and John Maguire adding to the scoring tally. A great kickout from Joe McMahon was worked up the field and tapped over the bar by Daly. However, the Castledaly lads worked hard and scored 1-2 in quick succession. McMahon brought off a good save in goals as Daly pointed on the 19^th minute. The game went on a point for point basis. Our lads worked tirelessly throughout and a late point from Daly secured Caulry the win on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-11.

Caulry Egan Cup Winning Team

Club Day & Social Evening

In conjunction with our Sponsor-a-Sod Fundraiser a club day and club social night took place on Saturday last. Proceedings began early in the day when the Caulry Ladies (U14 & U16) played a challenge match.

At 5:45pm our U10 boys played two challenge matches against Maryland/Tang and Ballymahon. The U10 panel for the day included: Aaron Hanevy, Eoin McCormack, Brian Doyle, Cian Malone, James O’Brien, David Gaynor, Darragh Shortall, Cian Lawless, Aaron Murphy, Jack Killane, Hugo McGowan, Michael McSharry, Jack O’Reilly, Rory Hatton, David Lynam, Dean Martin, Ciaran Lean, Tyler Mason, Lee Corcoran, Kyle Byrne, Gavin McSharry, Eoin Murphy and Max O’Sullivan.

Our Minor team was then presented with medals for winning the Division 2 League this year. This was followed by the Egan Cup Final, with Castledaly providing the opposition for Caulry (see match report above).

During halftime in the Egan Cup members of both the Caulry 1985 winning Intermediate Championship team and the winning Junior B Championship team were formally presented to those in attendance. These panels were as follows:
