Athlone 2-11

Caulry went to Pairc Chiarian Athlone on Thursday evening last for their final league match and came away with a one point victory after an absorbing contest. On a beautiful sunny evening, the good sized attendance were treated to a very entertaining and skilful game of football which is by now customary when these two footballing sides meet. The game could be divided into almost four equal quarters in that, Caulry were on top in the first and last, with the town side best in the middle. Despite being on top from the start, Caulry failed to put their superiority on the score board and gradually the home side grew into the game with some fine points, while a looped goal from Adam Donoghue and a well taken point by Zach Nolan were all Caulry had to show for their efforts as they trailed 1-5 to 1-1 at the interval. Athlone continued to have the upper hand on territory on the changeover despite playing against the breeze and extended their lead to six points. Thomas Dunning then burst through the defence to crash the ball high into the net, and the same player repeated his burst minutes later, and this time Roan Sweeney put an opportunist finish by fisting to the net. Athlone soon replied with a goal and a point. Caulry needed a response and again Thomas Dunning supplied it, this time cutting in from the opposite side to finish high in the net. Zach Nolan followed with an inspirational point, before the blues tacked on more points to go three up. However, Roan Sweeney provided another classy finish to the net to level matters once again. Both teams then went in search of the winner as play swung from end to end. A great move out of defence by the men in red finished with a great long range point by young Alan Malynn. A case of the right man in the right place. However, the drama was not yet over and Athlone got through for a one on one with our goalkeeper, but James Clavin produced a fantastic diving save to seal victory in heroic fashion. Well done to both teams with many fine performances throughout the field. James Clavin made a number of fine saves, while Glen Carolan, Daniel Buckley were defiant and heroic in defensive duties, Zach Nolan, Jamie Conlon got through an amount of work, while the well taken goals were timely and vital, it was the second half introduction of Tom Cloonan and Alan Malynn that finally gave our lads the vital edge. It was also good to have Adam Donoghue back on the Gaelic field and hopefully the team can now concentrate on preparing for a good championship campaign.

Regional Feile na Nog

Caulry will be taking part in the Regional finals of Feile na nOg on Saturday next. With over 80 teams representing 28 Counties taking place at 7 venues throughout the country. Caulry will initially be

based at the St Loman’s grounds in Mullingar, where they will be in a group consisting of Clonduff, Co Down and Roscommon side Oran. First match is at 11.30am and the scene is set for what should be a fantastic weekend of Gaelic football throughout Ireland.

Kilbeggan/St Josephs 2-5

Caulry played host to Kilbeggan/St Josephs on Friday evening last. Our lads found themselves holding a slender lead at the break and had to survive a determined challenge to come away with a narrow victory on a scoreline of 2-7 to 2-5. Well done lads!

Junior Championship

Caulry 0-16

Killucan 2-5

Caulry notched up their first win in this year’s Junior Championship as they travelled to Killucan on Friday evening last.

From the start Caulry were the dominant side. The team played very well and built up a commanding lead with Peter Smyth, Alan Carroll and Micky Fitzpatrick all in top scoring form. It was great to see Peter Smyth back in the red and white jersey, who scored an impressive 0-5 on the night.

There was five points between the sides at the final whistle on a scoreline of 0-16 to 2-5.

Division 1 ACFL

Caulry 1-5

Athlone 3-13

A much depleted Caulry side travelled to Pairc Chiarain for their latest Division 1 ACFL fixture on Sunday evening last and went down to Athlone on a scoreline of 3-13 to 1-5.

Both teams traded early points, with Damien Dolan and Paddy Sleator scoring for Caulry, and by the 10^th minute it was level pegging. A pointed free from Alan Fitzpatrick meant Athlone lead by two points at the interval on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-4.

On the resumption, Athlone, aided with the wind, scored an unanswered 1-5. A point and a goal, from a penalty, from Robbie Kenny and Alan Fitzpatrick respectively narrowed the gap to seven points. However, Athlone proved to be the hungrier side as they scored 2-1 late in the game to seal the victory. The scoreboard read 3-13 to 1-5 on the final whistle.
