Caulry 2-14

Shannon Gaels 3-11

Caulry and Shannon Gaels served up an exciting encounter in Tubberclair on Wednesday last where both sides finished level on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-11.

Both sides raced out of the tracks and exchanged early points. The opposition took the lead with a goal on the 6^th minute. A pointed-free from Conor McCormack narrowed the deficit. Our lads worked hard as Charlie Parker rattled the back of Shannon Gael’s net. Some good play from Colin Murphy allowed Cialan Dollard to add to the scoring tally. The game went on a point-for-point basis with Sean Clinton and McCormack on target for Caulry. Jack Connaughton brought off a great save in goals while McCormack sent the ball to the back of the net to leave six points between the sides. Late points for both sides meant Caulry led 2-7 to 1-4 at the interval.

Shannon Gaels were first to point in the second half. The opposition worked hard and a further unanswered 0-3 left just two points the margin. Caulry soon found their feet with Dollard and Clinton kicking over some fine scores. Shannon Gaels kicked the next two scores of the game. Some good defending from Sean Fox allowed McCormack and Lee Guinan to point. The opposition practised some good combined teamwork and notched up 1-1. Liam Doyle pointed for Caulry. However, Shannon Gaels fought hard and hit the back of the Caulry net for a third time. A late point from Guinan meant the match finished level-pegging on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-11.

Castledaly 2-8

Caulry notched up their second win of this year’s Division 4 ACFL as they ran out worthy winners over neighbours Castledaly on Thursday last.

Our lads were first off the mark with points from Stephen Brookes and Michael McMahon. A pointed-free from Gary Flanagan stretched the homeside’s lead. Castledaly soon followed suit with three points in quick succession to level proceedings. Mark Fitzpatrick tapped over a point. However, the opposition worked hard and rattled the back of the Caulry net on the 12^th minute. Points from Flanagan, Fitzpatrick and Ernie Buckley put Caulry back in front by the quarter hour mark. Gavin Byrne worked hard and found Stephen Woods who pointed late in the half to leave two points between the sides at the interval.

On the resumption, Castledaly battled hard and found the back of the Caulry net for a second time. The teams traded scores, with Stephen Connolly on target for the homeside. Further points from Fitzpatrick and Flanagan kept the scoreboard ticking over. Castledaly pulled back one from a free, which was shortly followed by another Connolly point. The all-important score of the evening came as substitute Jack Connaughton hit the back of the opposition’s net. Late points from Fitzpatrick and Brookes secured Caulry the win on a scoreline of 1-17 to 2-8.

Feis Cup Round 1

Caulry 1-7

The Downs 0-9

Caulry played host to The Downs in the opening round of this year’s Feis Cup on Saturday evening last and were lucky to escape with the win on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-9.

Caulry hit the ground running with a superb point from Robbie Hickey. The Downs soon found their feet with two quick points. The match went on a point-for-point basis with Alan Fitzpatrick, Conor McCormack and Robbie Kenny on target for the homeside. Some good fielding from Fitzpatrick enabled McCormack to tap over another point to leave the scoreboard reading 0-5 to 0-4 at halftime.

The opposition raced out of the tracks in the second half with two points in quick succession. A pointed-free from McCormack levelled proceedings on the 7^th minute. A great intercept from Fitzpatrick and a superb pass from Sean Doyle found Mark Fitzpatrick who rattled the opposition’s net. However, this lead was short lived as The Downs worked hard tapping over a brace of points. Our lads dug deep and a point from Hickey put Caulry back in front on the 25^th minute. The defence held strong, with Declan Donohoe and Stephen Brookes valiant in their endeavours, as Caulry ran out winners on the narrowest of margins.

Under 16 League Division 1

Caulry 5-7

Coralstown-Kinnegad 4-10

On Sunday evening last Caulry were in Kinnegad for this latest Under 16 football league match. This was a real thriller played in brilliant sunshine before a good sized crowd. Despite enjoying territorial advantage in the early exchanges the home side fail to score and Caulry capitalized to go 2-1 to no score ahead after 13 minutes thanks to two goals from Matthew Nally, one a penalty and a great long range effort from Darcy Lawless. However, Coralstown-Kinnegad soon found their range and led 2-4 to 2-4 at the break.

The second period continued end to end at breath taking pace and some great scoring for both teams. Coming to the final moments the home side regained a one point lead and looked to have snatched the league points. However, our lads once again showed their character and composure to work the ball into the left corner, where Thomas Dunning kicked a deserved equalising point over his left shoulder deep in injury time. For Caulry, James Clavin made a variety of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest. Jack Sheehan, Eoin Shortall and Adam Mullins were heroic in defence, Dylan Lowry and Zach Nolan, making a welcome return after injury, also stuck to their task against tricky opponents. Colin Murphy, Liam Doyle, Darcy Lawless played their hearts in the sweltering heat. However, once again when class was needed, it was five goal Matthew Nally who provided it.

A fair result on the balance of play and the league action now takes a break until June 27th to allow, junior cert players concentrate on their exams.

Westmeath Under 15 7-a-side Competition

The Westmeath Under 15 7-a-side competition gets underway on this Wednesday evening when Caulry play host to Maryland-Tang at 7.30pm in our local park.
