Junior Championship:

St Loman's 3-5 v Caulry 0-11

Having entered their second team in this year's Junior Championship, Caulry travelled to St Loman's, Mullingar last Sunday for a first round tie. This was a great competitive game of football and the favourites St Lomans had the best of the opening half converting two goal opportunities whilst Caulry missed similar goal scoring opportunities, and St Lomans lead at the break by 2-2 to Caulry's 2 points. An early goal in the second half stretched St Lomans lead but a great comeback by Caulry which unfortunately included a missed penalty saw the men in red put over some fine points from play by Eric Fallon (0-3), and a point each from Philip Dully, Keith Mc Menamin and Nicky Killane to leave only three points between the sides in favour of St Lomans at the final whistle, on a scoreline of St Lomans 3-5, Caulry 0-11. This was a fine display by our Junior squad and given that there are six more games yet to be played in the round robin format, they can look forward to better days ahead.

Div 2 County League:

St Lomans 2-15 v Caulry 0-9

Caulry took on senior club side St Loman's in a Div 2 County League tie in Mullingar last Saturday evening and despite Caulry playing with a stiff breeze in the first half our more illustrious opponents went in at the break leading on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-5 points. Two goals in the second half sealed victory for St Lomans who ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of St Lomans 2-15 Caulry 0-9. Despite the defeat to a club who are one of the favourites for senior honours this season this was a good workout for our Intermediate squad ahead of their next championship game in three weeks time.

Caulry v Tang

Mount Temple National School boys travelled to Cusack Park, Mullingar on Thursday last to play Tang in the Westmeath Comortas Na mBunscol Final. On a glorious sunshine day, hopes were high of bringing back the title after a long wait. What transpired was a completely different matter as the Tang boys went straight for the ‘jugular’ ala Kilkenny hurlers and never relented. Unfortunately, Mount Temple never reached anywhere near their potential and seemed completely overwhelmed by the occasion in front of their large following as they went down to a heavy defeat. The Mount Temple boys had one of those days, when the harder they tried the worst it became, while everything turned to ‘gold’ for the excellent Tang team. This was in stark contrast to the earlier group stage meeting of the sides when Tang only prevailed by the narrowest margin after a thriller.

Despite this our boys can feel proud after a great campaign were they played some wonderful football and provided many happy memories through the group stages, semi final and the many challenge games since last September. No stone was left unturned in the efforts of all concerned to win the count title.

Great credit and thanks must be given to Mr Liam Reilly and his club mentors, Jody Malynn and T.J. Dunning, to school principal Mr Ambrose McGowan and all the teaching, administration and back-up staff and of course the parents who were always available to assist. Most importantly thanks to a great group of players for a wonderful odyssey. This defeat will be particularly painful, but these young lads are too dedicated and talented to go away, and will learn and come back better for the experience.

Finally congratulations to Tang, no excuses, you were the best team all year and indeed last year and fully deserving winners. The even better news is that they too are unlikely to go away anytime soon, so our lads will have plenty of opportunity to turn the tables in the various grades into the future.
