Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 0-14
Ballymore 1-5
After losing the previous two Division 2 ACFL games, Caulry went into this encounter on Friday week last in search of two badly needed league points.
On a bitterly cold evening, it was the visitors who rose the temperature quickest running up three early points. Inevitably it was the dynamic Damian Dolan who led the Caulry response, driving forward to point. With Westmeath senior, Kevin Maguire exerting his considerable influence around the midfield area Caulry proceeded to take a grip on proceedings. A high point from Eoghan Grennan, was followed by points from Maguire, the Fox brothers and Conor McCormack to lead by one. We were then dealt a body blow when Ben Moran appeared to be fouled and as our defence hesitated, the referee waved play on and Ballymore applied the ultimate sanction. Caulry quickly regained their composure and points from Neil Clinton and Paddy Sleator left us one to the good at the break.
Caulry took up where they left off on the resumption of play. With 32 players togged and eager, the strength in dept became apparent as all the replacements enhanced the performance on their introduction and there was no way back the Ballymore men.
It was good to see regular netminder, Cillian Nagle return. Damian Dolan, Sean and Eoin Fox excelled both in defence and in attacking forays. The continued availability of Kevin Maguire was also paramount. While the number of players putting their hand up for a berth in attack continues to grow, the trick will be to get the right balance.
Team & Scorers: Cillian Nagle, Darren Hynds, Damian Dolan (0-1), Loughlin Casey, Sean Fox (-1), Ben Moran, Eoin Fox (0-1), Kevin Maguire (0-1), John Maguire, Neil Clinton (0-2), Conor McCormack (0-2), Stephen Connolly (0-2), Colin Murphy, Paddy Sleator (0-1), Eoghan Grennan (0-1).
Subs: Cialan Dollard (0-1) for Colin Murphy (BC), Emmet Nally (0-1) for Loughlin Casey, Thomas Dunning for Eoghan Grennan, Liam Malynn for Paddy Sleator
U16 League
Caulry 1-11
Shandonagh 1-8
Our U16s travelled up to Shandonagh on Monday evening last in the top of the league clash.
Playing against the wind and rain in the first half, Caulry conceded an early goal after an initial great save from Ruairi Casey. Caulry rallied and got the next two scores from Alan Malynn. Shandonagh then pointed which was cancelled out by a point from James Buckley. The opposition then scored two more points and were being made work very hard for their scores by a very tenacious backline. Malynn pointed another before Shandonagh registered their next two points to lead at half time on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-4.
Playing with the aid of the breeze in the second half, Caulry were making hard work of breaking down Shandonagh and they kicked the first point of the second half. Caulry then started to peg them back with points from Senan Baker, Malynn (0-2) and Oisin Shortall. Shandonagh tagged on two more before a free from Malynn left us two down. But cometh the hour, cometh the man as Sean Murphy rattled the back of the Shandonagh net to put us one up. Caulry then kicked on with two more points one from Murphy and Shane Lawless to help us run out winners on 1-11 to 1-8.
Team & Scorers: Ruairi Casey, Tiarnan O’Donovan, Sean Murphy (1-1), Alan Lynam, Harry Stuart Trainor, Tom Cloonan, Adam Doyle, Senan Baker (0-1), Aaron Murray, James Buckley (0-1), Alan Malynn (0-6), Paul Hogan, Adam Dunning, Shane Lawless (0-1), Joey Berry
Subs: Tadgh Baker for Paul Hogan, Oisin Shortall for Adam Dunning, Jamie Conlon for Joey Berry
Division 4 ACFL
Caulry 1-14
Tyrrellsspass 2-12
Caulry played host to Tyrrellspass on Tuesday of last week in the latest round of Division 4 ACFL fixtures. The teams served up an entertaining encounter despite the tricky breeze. The visitors had the better of the first half go in 1-7 to 0-4. Despite good work from the midfield pairing of Stephen Connolly, the forwards often took the wrong option with Anthony Allen the only one to find his range, while the backs were all at sea on numerous occasions.
Management were clearly unhappy and sent for the cavalry at the interval with over a third of the team being replaced. On the resumption, the intensity and quality of play greatly increased. A couple of monster points from the returning Andy O Sullivan and the evergreen, Peter Smyth got us back in the contest. With a constant supply from Connolly and Thomas Dunning, it was only a matter of time before Caulry further reduced the deficit courtesy of a well taken Paddy Sleator goal. Points from Colin Murphy and Allen put us in front, however the concession of a fortuitous goal with a high ball dropping to the net left us with a big hurdle. Credit the lads, they drew level again, but went down by the bare minimum as the teams swapped points in a grandstand finish.
This was the second game to lose in such fashion and another we could and should have won. However on a very positive note, it is heartening to see the mix of young emerging players mix with the experienced and the efforts of management to strike a balance between winning and giving adequate game time to all, the benefits which will be seen further down the road.
Team & Scorers: Declan Donohoe, Dylan Lowry, Sean Fox, Darren Hynds, Adam Mullins, Ernie Buckley, Harry Hughes (0-1), Gary Flanagan, Stephen Connolly (0-1), Sylvester Coughlan, Hugh Allen, Paddy Sleator (1-1), Liam Malynn
Subs: Peter Smyth (0-2) for Malynn, Colin Murphy (0-2) for Coughlan, Andy Sullivan (0-2) for H Allen, Thomas Dunning for Gary Flanagan
