Caulry v Maryland

Maryland 3-5

It was a game where both teams had to battle up until the final whistle but Caulry had the determination and will to win to edge out neighbours and old rivals, Maryland, on a scoreline of 3-7 to 3-5 in Hogan Park on Tuesday evening last.

Maryland hit the ground running with a fine point from play from Kieran Martin inside the opening 60 seconds. Maryland stretched their lead to two points on the 7^th minute. It took Caulry thirteen minutes to register their first score of the game, which came from a pointed-free from David Brookes. Brookes equalised a minute later with another free. Caulry got their noses in front with a superb point from Eoin Fox on the 23^rd minute, which was a lead Caulry would not relinquish. Caulry got their first goal of the evening after a superb pass from Alan Fitzpatrick enabled Robbie Kenny to rifle the ball to the back of the Maryland net. Great fielding from Gary Flanagan saw Paddy Sleator rattle the net a minute later which stretched Caulry’s lead to seven points. A late goal for Maryland narrowed the deficit to four points just before the interval, on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-2.

On the resumption, Maryland worked hard and a goal on the 35^th minute left just one point between the sides. Brookes kicked the next two scores of the game. Combined team work from Paddy Sleator and David Brookes saw Brookes tap the ball into the back of the Maryland net on the 46^th minute to leave six points between the sides. The teams traded scores, with Alan Fitzpatrick pointing for Caulry. A Maryland goal on the 57^th minute and a point from play left the narrowest of margins between the sides. Maryland had some missed opportunities and a point from Peter Smyth two minutes into injury time left the scoreboard reading 3-7 to 3-5 at the final whistle.

Mullingar Shamrocks 1-18

Caulry travelled to Rosemount on Saturday evening last for their latest SFC fixture and went down to a strong opposition on a scoreline of 1-18 to 3-5.

Caulry hit the ground running with a fisted goal from Paddy Sleator after some nice combined teamwork by Sleator and Alan Fitzpatrick. David Brookes pointed on the 4^th minute. Joe McMahon brought off a great save and a brilliant interception by Eoin Fox enabled Caulry to stretch their lead to five points with a fine point from Robbie Hickey. It took Mullingar Shamrocks thirteen minutes to get their first score as a goal opportunity was deflected over the bar by Joe McMahon. Brookes got his second score of the evening, which was soon followed by Mullingar hitting the back of the Caulry net on the 16^th minute. Mullingar Shamrocks began to dominate proceedings as they scored an unanswered 0-6 to leave Caulry trailing 1-8 to 1-3 at the interval.

Three quick scores early in the second half stretched the opposition’s lead to eight points. Paddy Sleator rattled the back of the Mullingar net for a second time on the 35^th minute, which was soon followed by a Shamrock’s point. Sleator got his third goal a minute later after a superb pass from Fox. However, Mullingar responded with four points in quick succession. Two pointed-frees from Alan Fitzpatrick and Conor McCormack narrowed the gap between the sides to five points. Unfortunately, Caulry chased the deficit throughout and a late score from Lorcan Smyth sealed the victory, with the scoreboard reading 1-18 to 3-5 at the final whistle.
