SFC Relegation Play-off Fixture

Despite picking up two championship wins last week, our seniors find themselves in a relegation play off this Saturday evening. Caulry will make the journey to Tubberclair at 6pm where they meet old rivals Maryland for a fourth time this year. Both teams met as part of the Division 2 ACFL, Feis Cup and SFC group stages earlier in the year with our lads notching up wins on each occasion. With the right attitude and performance, Caulry will be hoping to continue on their winning ways and overcome our neighbours in order to secure our senior status for 2018. This game is vital for the future of our club and all our supporters are asked to get behind the lads!

All Ireland Football Final Tickets Draw

Caulry are holding an All Ireland Football Final Tickets Draw on Friday 15th September 2017 in Egan’s Pub, Mount Temple. There are lots of prizes up for grabs on the night including four tickets for the All Ireland Football Final. Tickets are €5 each or €10 for a book of three and are available from any committee member and Kieran’s shop, Mount Temple.

Minor Championship

Caulry 1-13

Kilbeggan/Josephs 2-15

Caulry and Kilbeggan/Josephs served up an exciting encounter on Monday evening last in their third MFC outing.

Caulry raced out of the tracks with fine points from Liam Malynn and Colin Murphy inside the opening 60 seconds. Kilbeggan/Josephs drew level with a pointed-free and a fisted effort on the 2^nd and 5^th minute respectively. A pointed-free from Murphy edged Caulry in front. The Caulry lads combined well with a superb pass from Matthew Nally enabling Shane Cleary to rattle the opposition’s net on the 7^th minute. The teams traded scores with Cialan Dollard pointing for Caulry. The opposition battle hard and registered their first goal of the evening on the 11^th minute leaving just one point between the sides. Eoin Shortall defended well as another Dollard point kept the scoreboard ticking over. The homeside hit a purple patch between the 16^th and 19^th minute, scoring an unanswered 0-4 to take the lead. However, our lads dug deep with points from Dollard and Nally levelling the game on the 23^rd minute. Late scores from Murphy and Nally after some good work from Adam Mullins saw Caulry lead 1-9 to 1-7 at the interval.

On the resumption, Caulry missed some early scoring chances. A point from Malynn stretched Caulry’s lead to three points. However, this lead was short lived as the opposition kicked an unanswered 0-4. A converted ‘45’ from Dollard drew level on the 40^th minute. Substitute Darren Brown pointed to put Caulry’s noses in front by the end of the third quarter. However, the Killbeggan/Josephs boys never gave up, adding another unanswered 0-4 to the scoring tally. Murphy pointed a free for Caulry to leave just two points between the sides on the 54^th minute. However, a late goal from Kilbeggan/Josephs boys secured their win on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-13.

Junior Championship

Caulry 1-6

Athlone 2-14

Our juniors bowed out of this year’s championship campaign on Thursday evening last when they suffered a strong defeat to Athlone.

Caulry missed some early scoring opportunities as Damien Keenan showed well in goals. A fine point from Will Buckley got Caulry off the mark on the 4^th minute. Despite some good defending from Pat Buckley, the opposition raced up the field and sent the ball to the back of the Caulry net on the 12^th minute. Athlone then went on a quick scoring blitz which yielded an unanswered 1-3 between the 14^th and 19^th minute. James Daly worked hard at midfield and reduced the deficit with a point from play. A converted-free from Aidan Murphy left six points the margins. However, two late Athlone points left Caulry trailing by eight at the break on a scoreline of 2-5 to 0-3.

Brian Mullarney defended well throughout the second half as three quick scores for Athlone allowed them to build up a commanding lead. Caulry missed some chances to narrow the deficit with eventually Stephen Brookes drawing one back on the 37^th minute after a good pass from Daniel Seery. Michael McMahon brought off a good save on the 41^st minute to keep Caulry in the game. However, a determined Athlone still dominated proceedings, tapping over four more scores. Stephen Byrne tried hard when introduced as the game went on a point-for-point scoring basis with Seery on target for Caulry. A superb pass from Pat Buckley found Jay Walker who rattled the back of the opposition’s net on the 58^th minute. A late converted-free from Brookes meant Athlone ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-6.

U10 Matt Slevin Memorial Tournament

On Saturday last Caulry U10's travelled to Ballinacarrigy to take part in the Matt Slevin Memorial Tournament. After an unlucky start they made their way to the shield final. They saved their best performance to last coming out on top against a strong Lilliput Gaels side. Well done boys and I think it’s fair to say that the future looks bright for all these players.

Senior Championship

Caulry vs. Maryland

Maryland 1-9

Caulry and Maryland served up an exciting local derby in Tubberclair on Wednesday evening last for their fourth outing in this year’s SFC where Caulry showed the desire, aggression and will to win as they picked up their first brace of points in this year’s campaign.

Maryland raced out of the tracks, registering their first score of the game inside the opening 20 seconds. The opposition then doubled the deficit with another fine point. Our lads got off the mark on the 4^th minute as John Maguire pointed after a superb pass from Emmet Nally. Eoin Fox and Gary Flanagan combined well as the ball dropped to Andy O’Sullivan who rattled the back of the Maryland net. Cillian Nagle brought off a vital save on the 8^th minute. However, the men in blue still managed to score 1-2 without reply, leaving them tree points the good. Kevin Maguire pointed for Caulry on the 14^th minute to reduce the deficit before our lads spurned some chances to draw level. John Maguire worked hard at midfield. However, his work failed to pay dividends as a Maryland point widened the margins to three once again. A converted ‘45’ from Peter Smyth settled our lads somewhat on the 23^rd minute as Sean Clinton put his name on the scoreboard with a fine point from play. Nagle’s kick-out found Damien Dolan who combined well with Fox and set John Maguire up for his second point of the game. However, two unanswered points for the men in blue saw the scoreboard read 1-7 to 1-5 at the sound of the halftime whistle.

A converted-free from Conor McCormack three minutes after the resumption of play left just one point the margin. However, Maryland kept their noses in front as the game went on a point-for-point basis with Smyth on target for Caulry. A pass from Maguire found Gary Flanagan who got the all-important score of the evening with a well-taken goal to edge Caulry in front. The introduction of Ernie Buckley proved vital for Caulry as he showed the necessary guile and energy in both defence and attack. Points from O’Sullivan and Smyth stretched Caulry’s lead to three points by the 51^st minute. Buckley raced up the field and tapped over a fine point to give Caulry a more comfortable lead. Smyth converted another ‘45’ before his shot on goal trailed off to the side. Substitutes Alan Daly and Stephen Connolly done well when introduced as Daly set up Flanagan for a point. Our defence held strong when put under pressure with Buckley and Fox putting in standout performances as a late free from Smyth ensured Caulry a seven point win on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-9.

Caulry vs. Coralstown/Kinnegad

Coralstown/Kinnegad 2-7

Caulry continued on their winning ways on the following Saturday evening when they made the journey to TEG Cusack Park for their final group-stage game.

Both sides were slow to settle and were guilty of missing early scoring chances. Coralstown/Kinnegad got off the mark with a point from play on the 6^th minute. James Pettit defended well as Peter Smyth got Caulry off the mark with a pointed-free. Alan Fitzpatrick defended well as the teams traded scores with Smyth adding another free. Kevin Maguire and Declan Donohoe combined well, setting Conor McCormack up for a goal on the 13^th minute. However, this lead was short lived as Coralstown/Kinnegad raced down the field and rattled the back of the Caulry net to draw level. Another Smyth free kept the scoreboard ticking over. Coralstown/Kinnegad took the lead after they registered their second goal of the evening on the 21^st minute. However, after some good work from Donohoe, Emmet Nally hit the back of the opposition’s net on the 24^th minute. Gary Flanagan and Nally worked well together as Nally tapped over a fine point from play. A converted-free for Coralstown/Kinnegad left Caulry leading 2-4 to 2-3 at the interval.

On the resumption, two quick scores from McCormack stretched Caulry’s lead. Andy O’Sullivan put his name on the scoreboard with a point from play on the 35^th minute as Eoin Fox and Sean Clinton worked hard in defence. The teams exchanged scores with Damien Dolan and McCormack on target for Caulry after some good work from Stephen Connolly and Nally. A good pass from O’Sullivan found Smyth who put five points between the sides on the 52^nd minute. Dolan registered his second point of the game soon after. However, two late points for the opposition left the scoreboard reading 2-11 to 2-7 at the fulltime whistle.
