Caulry V Garrycastle

Caulry U16's got the season off to a good start with a win over neighbours Garrycastle. Caulry playing with a strong wind, scored freely in the first half. Good team work and accurate shooting resulted in eight Caulry players getting on the scoreboard by half time.Playing with the wind in the second half Garrycastle staged a comeback and a couple of early scores put Caulry under pressure. The Caulry lads re-grouped and worked hard to stay in the game. The hard work paid off and Caulry ran out easy winners. In a good team performance Cillian Nagle had a stormer in goal. Stephen Brookes put in a man of the match performance covering every inch of the pitch and Derek Shortall scored 1-03 in the second half to quell the Garrycastle comeback.

Mount Temple into Comortas Na mBun Scoil County Final

Mount Temple NS V Rathweir N.S. (Killucan) (28/03)

Mount Temple National School boys football team breached generation gaps to reach the Comortas Na mBun Scoil final on Wednesday last. Played in glorious 20 degree plus sunshine at the Caulry pitch before a capacity attendance including a good travelling support, the match proved absorbing and a classic with trills and spills all the way.

With Sean Woods and James Bracken dominating the midfield and lovely intricate forward play it was not long before Mount Temple’s dominance was turned into scores courtesy of a Liam Doyle goal. Soon after Donogh Prendergast raced through for a second major score, followed by a point by the same player. With the direct running of Donogh and excellent combination of the other forwards, Rathweir were on the rack throughout the first half. Any indiscretions were 100% punished by Liam Malynn, who gave an exhibition of place kicking from all angles. When Rathweir finally got off the mark, they were rocked right back with a brilliant forward combination play was once again expertly finished to the net by Liam Malynn to leave the half time score, 3-5 to 0-2 in favour of the red and white team.

Any thoughts of an easy path to the final were very quickly dispelled on the resumption of play by the boys in saffron and white with an early goal. Points followed and then a second goal really put the ‘cat among the pigeons’. Despite appearing sell shocked, the Mount Temple boys responded

with an inspirational point by James Bracken, while the same player later crashed the ball against the crossbar. The play continued end to end with brilliant goalkeeping by Christian Stephens and heroic defending by all the backs keeping Mount Temple that vital two scores in front. When Thomas Dunning kicked a lovely skilful point to go seven points clear, it looked the insurance score. However, the Rathweir boys refused to give up and scored a good goal and laid siege to the Mount Temple goal. With time almost up they scrambled another green flag and it was a delighted but relieved Mount Temple contingent that greeted referee, Joe Sheerin’s final whistle.

Great credit to both teams for a superb and exciting game of football and we now look forward to another similar effort in the final against old rivals, Tang.
