Minor Championship

Caulry 4-23

Killucan 0-3

Caulry picked up their second brace of points on Monday evening last as they travelled to Killucan for their latest Minor Championship fixture.

Caulry got off the mark with two quick scores which were neatly tapped over by Stephen Byrne. Killucan’s first point came on the 4^th minute, which was soon followed by another Byrne point. Caulry then made a crucial burst on the 6^th minute which yielded an unanswered 2-7 with Conor McCormack, Emmet Nally, Paddy Sleator and Sean Clinton on target. The teams traded scores just before half-time, with McCormack pointing for Caulry.

On the resumption, two goals (one from a penalty) and a point stretched Caulry’s lead. Overall the team worked well together, playing patches of nice football along with great combined teamwork. Killucan’s only score of the second half came on the 50^th minute. However, Caulry had to composure to see the game out with Byrne, Nally and McCormack kicking late points to secure the win on a final score of 4-23 to 0-3.

Caulry 1-16

Athlone 2-14

Caulry made their way to Páirc Chiarain on the following Saturday where they went down by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline of 1-16 to 2-14.

Athlone were first to get off the mark with two points from play. Sean Clinton pointed for Caulry on the 3^rd minute. Great combined teamwork from Jack Bradbury Hughes and Stephen Byrne enabled Byrne to add to the scoring tally. Three points separated the teams by the 15^th minute as Athlone rattled the back of the Caulry net. Conor McCormack halved the deficit as he converted a penalty. An unanswered 0-4 and some missed opportunities meant Caulry trailed by 1-9 to 1-4 at the interval.

Athlone raced into a nine point lead with a quick goal and point early in the second half. Fine points from Emmet Nally and Conor McCormack narrowed the gap. The teams traded scores, with Byrne, Clinton and McCormack pointing for Caulry, to leave seven points between the sides by the third quarter. Caulry went on a quick scoring blitz which yielded an unanswered 0-6, with McCormack, Byrne and Stephen Connolly all on target. Jack Connaughton played well in goals and brought off some great saves on the night. Unfortunately, Caulry chased the deficit throughout and a late point for Athlone secured the win on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-16.

Under 14 Championship Division 2 Semi Final

Caulry 4-8

Milltownpass 1-14

On Sunday morning last Caulry and Milltownpass travelled to Ballinacargy for this eargely awaited semi final. On a perfect day for football a pulsating contest ensued, expertly referred by Brendan Kenna. When these two sides met in the earlier championship league qualifying section, the score was Milltownpass 4-16 Caulry 2-9. For three quarters of this game, it looked like Milltownpass would again prevail. Think Olan Healy throwing himself head long into a tackle without any thought for personal safety, or the shear class of Roan Sweeney and Adam Donoghue shining through when the game needed to be won, or the marvellous contribution of the subs bench in Tom Cloonan in particular. Little moments like that can make the big difference. At half time, Milltownpass led 0-8 to 1-1 and quickly added a point from the resumption throw in. However, Caulry had missed at least three gilt edge goal opportunities in the first half which could have put a very different complexation on the scoreboard. A great move orchestrated by Roan Sweeney was brilliantly finished to the net by Thomas Dunning to give Caulry a lifeline. However, Milltownpass kept coming back with a score or two to keep 5 or 6 points ahead. However, a number of tactical switches and the introduction of Tom Cloonan and Alan Malynn gave Caulry fresh impetus. In the last ten minutes, they monopolised possession to turn a five point deficit into a six point lead entering injury time, with brilliantly worked moves carving open, the strong Milltownpass defence for typical finishes by Rory Mullins and Roan Sweeney. Adam Donoghue then went on the rampage with a series of runs and sublime points to put the red and white in the ascendency. However, the boys in white and black never gave up and scored a fine goal before the end of the contest.

It’s a pity all football can’t be played in this skillful and sporting manner. But certainly there in a number of players on both clubs, who will no doubt continue to represent their clubs and Westmeath with distinction well into the future.

This was Caulry’s best all round performance of the year, particularly in the second half when their belief and overall class told in the end. James Clavin, made a number of superb saves including two one on ones, while his kick- outs found their target on a very consistent. Ciarian Gaynor, Glenn Carolan, Luke Hamilton were tigerish and resilent in defence. Colin Shortall and Daniel Buckley made some brilliant tackles and interceptions throughout. Zach Nolan and James Carey’s high fielding was top class, which Olan Healy was once again inspirational in everything he did. Jamie Conlon, Thomas Dunning and Rory Mullins once again ran themselves to a standstill in a number of positions, while the superior skill of Roan Sweeney, Luke Buckley and Adam Donoghue proved a bridge too far when added to the introduction of Tom Cloonan and Alan Malynn, for Milltownpass in the end.
