Minor League Division 1

Caulry 5-8

St. Lomans 6-16

Caulry and St. Lomans served up an entertaining minor league match at our local venue on Wednesday evening last.

Both teams got off to a good start and traded early points. However, the visitors began to dominate proceedings with a scoring blitz, in which they scored 1-4. A goal from Stephen Byrne on the quarter hour mark narrowed the deficit. St. Lomans responded with three points in quick succession. Caulry hit the back of the St. Loman’s net for a second time after Kristen Jocher tapped in the ball after an attempt from substitute Conor McCormack had been saved. A late point from Conor McCormack meant Caulry trailed by three points at the interval, on a scoreline of 2-2 to 1-8.

An early penalty for Caulry in the second half meant it was level pegging with twenty eight minutes to be played. Caulry began to take charge, with Conor McCormack, Jordan Dunning and Sean Fox all scoring superb points. Our lads seemed to sit back and allowed the opposition back into the contest as St. Lomans scored two goals in the space of 60seconds. St. Lomans kicked the next two points of the game. A point from Paddy Sleator narrowed the gap to four points as the scoreboard read 3-10 to 3-6. Three points separated the sides half way through the second half as Conor McCormack and Jack Bradbury Hughes added to the scoring tally. St. Lomans proved to be the hungrier side on the night as they scored an unanswered 2-4 to seal the victory. Caulry worked hard up until the final whistle as they scored two late goals from Sylvester Coughlan. The match finished on a scoreline of 5-8 to 6-16.

Under 16 League Division 1

In our final League game played at Drumraney on Monday week last, Caulry finished their campaign as the started with a good win. This was a fine performance by all eighteen players who played and argues well for the upcoming championship if form can be maintained. Darren Browne’s variety on his kick-out gave his team a major advantage, with Jack Sheehan and Sean Fox forming a solid central spine. Aaron Fallon and Sean Woods were teak tough in defence. At midfield Colin Murphy led the way, while his partner, Sam Nolan showed what great potential he possess if he can reach full fitness. Further a-field Neil Clinton’s all action display is worthy of special mention also.

Regional Feile na Nog

The Regional finals of Feile na Nog were held at various venues throughout the country on Saturday last. Caulry were based at The St Loman’s grounds in Mullingar in a revised initial group with Oran, Roscommon, St Vincent’s Dublin and Inane Rovers, Tipperary. Due to holidays, injuries and other commitments, it was much depleted depleted Caulry force that went into action. Oran were first up and the greater scoring power of the Roscommon men prevailed in a good contest. However, a brilliantly executed goal by little James Buckley was the true highlight on the astro surface. We moved to the grass surface where, the famed St Vincent’s club were next up and the sheer size and power of the Mario boys was way too much for our young team, as indeed it was against all their other opponents as they won the cup with ease. In the final group match versus Inane Rovers, we again came out second best as the rain came bucketing down. However, Caulry played some fine football throughout and got better as the day went on as the new line-out began to jell. This was a great experience for our young players to be playing such new and vaunted oponents and will no doubt stand them in good stead for the future. James Clavin was the undoubted stand out goalkeeper on the day with a string of all types of saves. Glen Carolan, Ciarian Gaynor were excellent defenders all day. As usual Olan Healy gave his all in a variety of roles, while new recuits Senan Baker, Ruairi Casey and James Buckley were no way fazed against much older and bigger opposition and showed they have much to offer. Well done to GAA on a well organised event. While this was our first time to qualify, we look forward to being back in the future, hopefully with a full strength side to pick from.

Tubberclair Tournament

Semi Final

Caulry 1-9

Tubberclair 3-18

Caulry travelled to Tubberclair for their local tournament on Friday evening last and a heavy defeat meant Caulry would be meeting Ballynacargy in the Shield Final.

Tubberclair hit the ground running with two early points. Caulry got off the mark in the 5^th minute with some nice combined team work by Robbie Kenny and Robbie Hickey resulting in a fine point from play by Eoghan Grennan. A well-taken goal by Conor McCormack put Caulry ahead by a point on a scoreline of 1-3 to 1-2 on the quarter hour mark. However, late points and a goal for Tubberclair left Caulry trailing by ten points at the interval on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-4.

The second half continued in the same vein with Caulry chasing the deficit throughout. Points from Conor McCormack and Alan Fitzpatrick narrowed the gap with fifteen minutes remaining. However, Tubberclair rallied on and sealed the victory on a final score of 3-18 to 1-9.

Shield Final

Caulry 2-9

Ballynacargy 2-15

Caulry played Ballynacargy in the Shield Final on the following Saturday evening.

Caulry opened the scoring tally with a fine point from play from Eoghan Grennan. Ballynacargy responded with two points in quick succession. Caulry raced into a five point lead with goals from Sean Doyle and Robbie Hickey. This lead was shortly lived as the opposition hit the back of the Caulry net in the 13^th minute. Both teams traded points before half time with Eoin Fox, Paddy Sleator and John Maguire putting their names on the scoreboard. At the interval, the scoreboard read 2-4 to 1-7.

On the resumption, substitute Peter Smyth scored a superb point to put Caulry ahead. However, Ballynacargy proved to be the hungrier side as they scored an unanswered 1-3. Gavin Byrne kicked the next score of the game, which was soon followed by a Ballynacargy point. Late points from Peter Smyth and Jack O’Meara meant the scoreboard read 2-15 to 2-9 at the final whistle.

Thanks to Tubberclair for organising the tournament and to those who took part in it. There were plenty of positives to be taken from both games. It was a great opportunity for players to show their abilities and it was a great workout before the championship.

Inter-County

Well done to Damien Dolan, Kevin Maguire and the rest of the Westmeath panel on their historic win over rivals Meath on Sunday in the Leinster semi-final.
