Mobile Cardiac Screening

Caulry GAA will host a Mobile Cardiac Screening in the park on Saturday, November 9th from 9:30am to 5pm. This service costs €67.50 per person or is free with LAYA Health Insurance. For more information on how to book, visit www.ameds.ie or check out our Facebook page.

Leinster Intermediate Club Championship

Caulry 0-7

Dunlavin 1-11

Our lads failed to get going in Athlone on Saturday afternoon last when they battled it out against Wicklow county champions, Dunlavin in the opening round of the Leinster club championship.

Paddy Sleator opened the scoring account within the opening 30 seconds after combining nicely with Conor McCormack. The Dunlavin forwards soon followed suit as they tagged on two points to take the lead. A converted-free from a tight angle put the Wicklow side two points the good after 4 minutes. Gary Flanagan then added another for Caulry after a fine pass from McCormack. However, the opposition responded in style as they tore down the field and rattled the back of the Caulry net. Despite a surge forward from Sean Clinton, our lads struggled to convert their chances as their tally of wides grew. The Dunlavin forwards, however, capitalised on their chances with a nice fisted-effort on the 9^th minute. Harry Hughes made a run forward with the move being finished off nicely by Emmet Nally. Our lads were then unlucky as two goal chances were brilliantly saved before Andy O’Sullivan put his name on the scoreboard after settling for a point. However, the opposition’s dominance at midfield proved to be a vital platform as they kicked the next two scores of the game. Another point from O’Sullivan drew one back on the 22^nd minute. A Flanagan goal was disallowed late in the half due to the ‘square-ball’ rule which meant Caulry trailed by four at the interval on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-5.

An early goal chance from our lads was well swept up by the Dunlavin defence before the two teams traded wides. Dunlavin then stretched the margins between the teams with points on the 37^th and 38^th minutes. Cillian Nagle brought off a good save as the opposition sent the rebound over the bar. Our lads struggled to put passages of play together in the forward line as another point for the opposition put eight between the sides. Adam Donoghue drew one back on the 51^st minute which was soon cancelled out by a converted-free for the opposition. A late free from Conor McCormack saw the scoreboard read 1-11 to 0-7 at the fulltime whistle as the Wicklow men deservedly ran out winners.

Despite this disappointing defeat, it won’t define our year. Our lads must be commended for their otherwise hugely successful championship campaign. After a sluggish start with two defeats, the lads managed to turn their year around and lifted the Geraghty cup for the fourth time in the club’s history. As well as claiming promotions to senior ranks for their 2020 campaign, our lads must be praised for the fine brand of football they played. Without doubt, the lads have a very bright future of football ahead of them.

Well done to the lads and their management team of John Benton, Damien Keenan and Robbie Ryan for their dedication during the year.

Intermediate Winning Team of 1969

At halftime of during the game, our Intermediate winning team of 1969 were honoured. This year marks the 50^th anniversary since Caulry claimed the Peter Geraghty cup for the first time after beating Ballynacargy on a scoreline of 2-6 to 0-6. The then secretary Willie Claffey welcomed the team onto the pitch and all past players were given a copy of the match programme from that day. The winning team was as follows: Stephen Hanevy, Frank Conlon, Jim McDonnell, Packie Allen, Willie Allen, Padraig Malone, Tom Seery, Tom Fitzgearld, Pat Allen, TP Hickey, James Fox, Noel Nugent (RIP), Jack Allen, George Hatton, PJ Cunningham, Eamon Daly, Mickey Murray, Seamus Allen, Jimmy Fallon, Richie Allen.
