Under 16 Championship Division 1

Caulry 10-13

Lilliput Gaels 4-8

Caulry travelled to Ballinagore on Monday week last for the latest round the Westmeath Under 16 championship. On a bright sunny evening, the gulf in class between top of Division 1 league and bottom of Division 2 league, was very evident right from the start as Colin Murphy raced through for the first score in the opening seconds. Goals from Liam Doyle, Matthew Nally and Adam Donoghue soon followed, before slack defending allowed the game home side scored two goals of their own. We continued our superiority to lead 4-8 to 2-1 at the break.

The St Malachy’s/Ballinagore combination tried their best on the changeover, but had no answer to the power and teamwork of our lads who continued to notch up the scores, despite some heroic goalkeeping from Lilliput, in addition to the woodwork and wayward shooting also coming to their aid.

Despite this victory, our lads will know there is plenty to do on the training ground for the stiffer challenges ahead. While James Clavin could not be faulted for the ones that beat him, only Adam Mullins, Glenn Carolan, Zach Nolan and Ciaran Geoghegan will be happy with their defensive performances. Colin Murphy, Neil Clinton, Sean Fox and Liam Doyle put in their usual high work rate, with the movement and combination play of Thomas Dunning, Adam Donoghue and Matthew Nally proving the highlight on the evening.

U14 Championship

Caulry 1-11

Killucan 5-8

Our U14 boys went down to a strong Killucan side on Thursday evening last for their latest championship game.

The opposition were first off the mark with a point from play. Josh Jocher defended well in the early stages off the game as a point from James Carey levelled the game on the 7^th minute. A well taken point from Luke Buckley and goal from Carey stretched Caulry’s lead. Our lads begin to dominate the game as Carey, Alan Malynn and Rory Mullins all tapped over some fine scores. However, the opposition never gave up and rattled the back of the Caulry net on the 19^th minute. Two unanswered points for the visitors left just two points between the sides. Ciaran Gaynor and Tom Cloonan defended well as a point from Olan Healy kept the scoreboard ticking over. The Killucan boys hit the back of the Caulry net for a second time on the 23^rd minute to leave it level pegging. A late point from Senan Baker meant our lads lead by the narrowest of margins at the halftime whistle on a scoreline of 1-7 to 2-3.

After the break, an early point from Shane Lawless doubled the deficit. However, Killucan worked tirelessly throughout and scored an unanswered 2-2 in quick succession. Alan Malynn pointed to narrow the margins. Killucan kicked a brace of fine points in the final quarter. Our boys never gave up as Luke Buckley kicked two late points. However, a Killucan goal on the 31^st minute sealed the victory on a scoreline of 1-11 to 5-8.

Junior Championship

Caulry 1-7

St Lomans 3-9

Caulry suffered an eight point defeat to a strong opposition on Friday last as they made the journey to Lakepoint Park for their latest JFC fixture.

St. Lomans were first off the mark with a quick point from play. Keith McMenamin got Caulry off the mark on the 3^rd minute after a superb pass from Stephen Brookes. The opposition went in front with two quick scores. Charlie Parker defended well as Gavin Byrne added to the scoring tally. However, the opposition went on a quick scoring blitz late in the half, which yielded an unanswered 2-3, to leave Caulry trailing 2-6 to 0-2 at the interval.

Stephen Woods pointed early in the second half to narrow the deficit. However, the opposition drove on with a brace of points. The game went on a point-for-point basis, with McMenamin and Eoin Donohoe on target for Caulry. However, St. Lomans rattled the back of the Caulry net on the 41^st minute to leave twelve points the margin. Our lads worked hard as Eric Fallon and Alan Carroll tapped over some fine scores late in the game. Eric Fallon then hit the back of the Mullingar men’s’ net late in the game. Ultimately, our lads chased the deficit throughout as St. Lomans ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 3-9 to 1-7.

Tyrrellspass 0-20

Caulry suffered their second defeat in this year’s SFC as they went down to a strong Tyrrellspass side on Sunday evening last.

Tyrrellspass hit the ground running with a pointed-free early in the game. The opposition tagged on some nice scores as our lads struggled to find their feet. Caulry got off the mark on the 14^th minute after a superb pass from Conor McCormack found Gary Flanagan who sent the ball to the back of the Tyrrellspass net. Joe McMahon brought off a good save in goals as the opposition pressed hard. Tyrrellspass played patches of fine football and scored an unanswered 0-4. The teams traded scores late in the half, with David Brookes on target for Caulry, to leave our lads trailing 1-1 to 0-10 at the interval.

On the resumption, the opposition dominated proceedings, scoring four points in quick succession. John Maguire fielded well as a pointed-free from Robbie Hickey drew one back. Tyrellspass kicked the next two scores of the game. Eoin Fox and James Pettit defended well when put under pressure as a point from Damien Dolan narrowed the margins. The game went on a point-for-point basis with Alan Fitzpatrick adding to the scoring tally. Dolan rattled the back of the opposition’s net on the 29^th minute as a pointed-free tom Brookes reduced the deficit. However, Tyrrellspass tapped over a late score to run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-5 to 0-20.

Our Minor team play host to Rosemount on Friday evening at 7:15pm for their latest championship fixture. This is an important game for the lads as a win would mean they top their group and qualify for a quarter final. All supporters are asked to get behind the lads!
