U16 League
Caulry 11-11
St. Michaels 1-7
Our U16 lads wrapped up their league campaign with a comprehensive win over St. Michaels in the park on Friday evening last.
Our boys raced out of the tracks with James Buckley scoring an impressive 1-2 in the opening moments of the game. Shane Lawless then put his name on the scoresheet as he added two goals before Paul Hogan registered the home-side’s fourth goal of the game. Lawless got his hattrick as the opposition struggled to get the ball up the field. Further scores from Sean Murphy, Alan Malynn and Tadgh Baker cushioned the Caulry lead. The St. Michaels goalie then brought off a fine save on the 18th minute as his teammates found their feet with a fine point at the other end of the field. Another point for the opposition drew another back before late scores from Josh Rhattigan and Murphy gave Caulry a comfortable lead at the break.
It was the opposition who started the better of the two teams as they drew back 1-2 early in the second half. Goals from Aaron Murray and Alex Grinko settled our lads back into the game. The teams then shared four points with Adam Dunning and Murphy adding for Caulry. The Caulry boys played patches of nice combined football as the next two scores of the game came from the boots of Rhattigan and Grinko. However, the opposition never gave up as a late 1-1 meant our lads ran out winners on a scoreline of 11-11 to 1-7.
Team & Scorers: Ruairi Casey, Oisin Shortall, Sean Murphy (1-2), Adam Doyle, Harry Stuart Trainor, Tom Cloonan, Aaron Murray (1-0), Senan Baker, Alan Lynam, James Buckley (1-3), Alan Malynn (0-1), Paul Hogan (1-1), Josh Rhattigan (2-1), Shane Lawless (4-0), Alex Grinko (1-1)
Subs: Tadgh Baker (0-1), Tiarnan O’Donovan, Adam Dunning (0-1), Joey Berry
This win means our boys finished top of the table after winning all their games. Well done to the lads and their management.
Official Opening of the New Pitch and Walking Track
The official opening of our new pitch and walking track took place on Sunday last. Proceedings kicked off with all our underage teams taking part in matches. This was then followed by the official opening and blessing of the pitch by Fr. PJ Fitzpatrick. Ger O’Kelly Lynch welcomed the good-sized attendance before County Chairman Billy Foley spoke. He spoke highly of the positive contributions of the club and highlighted the addition of our new facilities as a proud day for Westmeath GAA. He then concluded by wishing us all the best in the future. Club Chairman James Casey then talked on behalf of the club. He spoke in detail about the history of the club and how it has developed throughout the years. He thanked the Club Trustees, FÁS team and various committees for their tremendous work in developing the grounds. He also expressed sincere gratitude to all sponsors and to those who contributed to fundraising. He praised the development committee for their countless hours of work and invited Fr. PJ to bless the new facilities. This was then followed by the unveiling of the plague by trustees Tom Fitzgerald and Tom Seery and the cutting of the ribbon by club president Richie Allen. James then concluded by thanking everyone for their support on the day.
Many thanks to all who helped out in any way on this historic occasion for our club and well done to all involved in organising the event.
Photos from the day can be found on our club Facebook page.
