U12 Garrycastle Tournament

Our U12s continued on their winning ways in this year’s Garrycastle Tournament as they overcame Kilbeggan/Josephs on Friday evening

Our boys got off to a good start with an early goal from Tadgh Baker after a good pass from Andrew Stuart Trainor. Dean Byrne soon doubled the deficit with another well-taken goal as he combined well with Cody Parker. Aaron Hanevy then made it three unanswered goals with his fine effort coming on the 3^rd minute. Kilbeggan/Josephs drew one goal back as they opened their scoring account with a fine goal. However, Hanevy responded well with his second shot finding the back of the opposition’s net on the 6^th minute. Oisin Shortall fielded well and set Andrew Stuart Trainor up for his first point of the game. The teams exchanged points with Dean Byrne and Stuart Trainor adding to the scoring tally. The Kilbeggan/Jospehs’ side worked hard, registering their second goal of the evening on the 18^th minute. Tiarnan O’Donovan worked hard as good combined teamwork from our boys enabled Conor Hynes to put his name on the scoresheet. Cormac Murphy and Cian Heavin defended well in the later stages of the half to leave Caulry in front as the break.

On the resumption, a goal from Brendan Kelly McCormack put Caulry in the driving seat. Despite good defending from Aaron Murphy, the opposition raced inside and sent the ball to the back of the Caulry net for their third goal of the evening. Scores were less easy come by in the second half with both defences working hard. Ian Malone done superb when put under pressure, denying Kilbeggan/Josephs three shots on goal late in the half. Aaron Hanevy impressed throughout, both in defence and attack as he got his hattrick on the 42^nd minute. Late points for both sides ensured Caulry ran out winners on a scoreline of 6-5 to 3-4.

Under 16 Division 2 Championship Semi-Final

Caulry bowed out at the semi final stage of the Under 16 Division 2 championship at wind swept Ballymore on Saturday last. The strong cross field blustery conditions led to a disjointed display and made a lottery of any shooting opportunities. As a result both teams were slow to settle and it was the sixth minute before a brilliant run into space and a diagonal pass from the lively Senan Baker, put Shane Hynes in the clear and he finished with great aplomb to the roof of the net. With Thomas Dunning and Olan Healy ruling the midfield area, and Ciaran Gaynor and Daniel Buckley driving forward, Caulry had a good platform for possession to the forwards, where Adam Donoghue, Luke Buckley and Senan Baker were showing well despite some tough defensive treatment. However, a number of opportunities went a begging before an Adam Donoghue free put our lads four points to the good. Shandonagh the responded with two points. Good work by Thomas Dunning, Ciaran Gaynor and Olan Healy resulted in another excellent cross field pass for the in running, Rory Mullins to slot over. More fine combined play by Thomas and Olan, was embellished by a neat finish over the bar by the latter. Caulry were now looking to be hitting their rhythm, unfortunately this was broken by the shrill of the half time whistle with the score 1-3 to 0-2.

Shandonagh secured the first two points of the second half, before our lads got a grip on the game again with our midfield and half backs continuing to drive forward. The Sky blue goal survived a somewhat of a charmed life for a period. Latching on to a great pass from Alan Malynn, Senan Baker escaped his marker and rounded the goalkeeper, however, from the acute angle he could only manage the side netting. Then Luke Buckley raced in along the end before flashing a shot across the face of the goal when a lay off to an incoming player might have been a better option. Next a burst and a low drive from Thomas Dunning beat the keeper, but was stopped on the line by a defender, and as the ball ricocheted around the goalmount, a number of Caulry players had a go on the rebounds, but incredibly it would not go in the net. With the frustrating conditions and the constant impediments we found it difficult to play our free flowing game, this in turn led to some very uncompromising exchanges as the game wore on. Thomas Dunning pointed a good long range free from the ground, before the same player combined Adam Donoghue to shoot a fine score from play. Shandonagh pointed a free, before the tireless work of the Dunning/Healy duo was rewarded with another good finish over the bar by Olan. Another point for the opposition reduced the lead to a goal and with our defence looking solid it looked as if we might hold on. However, a 45 metre free then somehow found its way directly into the Caulry net through a forest of hands for fortuitous goal with three minutes remaining on the clock. With our lads looking stunned, Shandonagh poured forward to go into the lead for the first time. As our lads regrouped, a turn over resulted in a converted free. With the margin now two points , only a goal could save the men in red. Fielding the kick out, Thomas Dunning burst upfield, but was twice dragged down. Rory Mullins and Luke Buckley received the same treatment as the opposition sought to protect their goal, before a head high tackle dumped Adam Donoghue to the ground close to goal. As the entire opposition lined their goal, Adam stood over the ball but unfortunately his shot flew over the bar to bring to an end a somewhat fractured and disjointed season and what might have been for yet another Caulry team in 2017. While Caulry were undoubtly the better team, the harsh reality is that it is Shandonagh who are in the final.
