2014 Intermediate Final Player Profiles

The following is a profile of the Caulry Intermediate squad for Sunday’s Final against Rosemount.

Joe McMahon: Student. Joe is a very reliable custodian with a great variety on his kick-outs which gives his team-mates a major advantage. Has represented Westmeath at under age levels.

Eoin Fox: Student: Current Westmeath minor star, Eoin has burst on to the Intermediate scene this year with a series of inspirational performances. His versatility is also an important asset for his team.

Kevin Maguire: National School Teacher: Kevin is known far and wide for his outstanding man marking duties for Westmeath against a variety of the country’s top forwards and has been outstanding once again in Caulry’s march to the final with his electrifying bursts out of defence.

James Pettit: Student: James has grown in confidence into a durable tight marking defender in recent years following a promising underage career. Hoping to win his first adult medal on Sunday.

Damian Dolan: Accountant: One of Caulry’s most consistent performers down the years, Damian was finally rewarded with a regular spot in the Westmeath senior defence in recent times. His magnificent point in the semi-final replay will long live in the memory, and similar heroics in Sunday’s final will go a long way to bringing home the cup.

Ben Moran: Student: The third member of the Caulry backline with Senior county experience, Ben has also been a regular underage Westmeath player through the grades. Unfortunately he has been plagued by a series of injuries, but has thankfully recovered for recent matches where his contribution has been immense and will have a major influence on Sunday’s outcome.

Brian Mullarney: Lecturer: The long serving Brian has made a welcome and timely return to form and the team in recent matches, where his experience and will to win will be vital ingredients for final day. Holder of Junior championship medals.

Alan Fitzpatrick: Student: Alan is driving midfielder force with a penchant for spectacular scores due to his powerful bursts. Almost, single handily dragged Caulry over the line in last year’s replay. A similar full match performance would be most welcome against the black and ambers. Represented Westmeath up to under 21 levels.

Gary Flanagan: Secondary School Teacher: Holder of three Junior championship medals, former county player, Gary would dearly love to add that elusive Intermediate medal as a reward for loyal service and consistency of performance over the years. Maybe he might be able to give’ extended detention’ to his Rosemount student opponents this weekend.

Eoghan Grennan: Student: Last year’s captain, Eoghan’s absence from the final replay was a major factor in his team’s loss, as his driving force was solely missed. Happily recovered from a number of shoulder injuries, he is returning to top form in time for the big day with a hugh contribution to the semi-final success.

Alan Rigney: Financial Services: Work commitments forced long serving Alan to miss the early stages of this year’s championship where his tigerish ball winning ability was keenly felt. His father Peter was centre forward on the last winning team in ’85 in what could be a lucky omen.

Alan Daly; Student: Minor player Alan good displays has justifiability forced his way onto the team in recent games where he will no doubt come up against many of his Rosemount Moate Community College class mates.

David Brookes: Student: David’s all round ability would mark him out as a top talent in any sport. Having played League of Ireland soccer, David has happily returned to prove a ‘game changer’ and saviour for Caulry on numerous occasions.

Peter Smyth: Star Man: Caulry’s leading scorer for a number of years, Peter has arguably been in the form of his life this year, like a vintage wine, getting better with age. Deadly from play or frees, an intermediate medal would sit nicely alongside his three junior awards.

Andrew O Sullivan: Student: Andy was a free scoring underage star, whose senior progress was halted by a number hamstring problems. Contributed well in recent victories and fully fit he can be a match winner.

John Maguire: Student: The second of the Maguire siblings, Big John has had a very disrupted year, what with a summer sojourn in the United States and injury in the quarter final. His power and ball winning ability will be a major loss if he is unavailable for Sunday.

Sean Doyle: Student: Sean is equally adept with the Buccaneers oval ball, but has contributed massively to Caulry’s progress this year with his versatility and ball winning ability. Played with Westmeath in 2013 Leinster final appearance.

Ernie Buckley: Clerical Officer: Ernie has been a consistent and reliable performer for Caulry in almost every position over the years. This unfortunately for him may have cost him a starting place although his contribution deserves better and no one would be more deserving of a winners medal.

Declan Donoghue: Community Worker: This former Westmeath minor player has returned from a serious knee injury with a series of powerful impressive displays across the backline. His semi-final introduction at midfield was a significant factor in turning the tide for his team.

Robbie Hickey: Student: Also played in the 2013 Leinster minor final. Given the right type of ball, Robbie, can be a scoring machine, as evidenced with 2-6 in last years semi-final replay. Also contributed a valuable point in last Fridays reply.

Harry Hughes: Student: Speed merchant, Harry is also a rugby playing starlet with the Buccs. His pace and ability to play all over the field make him a valuable member of the squad. Has represented Westmeath to under 16 level, before rugby intervened.

Michael McMahon: Student: This year’s Westmeath Under 21 goalkeeper and brother of Joe, Michael is better known as an important member across Caulry’s defence until injury ruled him out. Faces a race against time for Sunday’s final.

Ben Kenny: Student: Talented attacker who has progressed through Caulry’s underage system, Ben appeared in last year’s final and has made important contributions to this year’s campaign.

Killian Nagle: Student: Minor player, Killian provides top class goalkeeping back-up. One of the most dedicated members of the panel, whose enthusiasm and willingness to learn will serve him well in the future.

Robbie Ryan: Student: Robbie is free scoring forward who would surely be regular at this stage but for various injuries curtailing his progress. Played in some of the earlier rounds and can be a match winner on his day.

Jack O Kelly Lynch: Student: Dual star, Jack combines his football with hurling for Father Daltons. Another who has played in a variety of positions and in last year’s final against St Malachy’s.

Keith McMememain: Defence Forces: Keith is a very tidy defender or half forward, who lost out through injury in recent times but can be relied upon to do a good job when called upon with previous final experience.

Michael Fitzpatrick: Defence Forces: Micky has been a stalwart member of the junior squad as a ball winning midfielder and has been unlucky not to make Intermediate team. Will give his all if called upon.

Alan Carroll: Garda Siochana: Alan’s scoring ability, particularly his goal scoring prowess is renowned. With a number of junior awards, an intermediate one would cap a fine career.

Jack O Meara: Engineer: Jack had a sabbatical in the United States due to work commitments, but has returned to help the championship quest having played two years ago.

Evan Roarke: Student: Another who has come through the underage system but has been curtailed by injury. Ability to play in a number of positions.
