Under 16 League Division 1

Caulry 2-6

Mullingar Shamrocks 0-12

This second round league clash between Caulry and the visiting Shamrocks proved to be a very competitive affair on Monday week last. Both sides showed their intent from the start, with Mullingar opening the scoring with a point. A good flowing move, involving Thomas Dunning and Adam Donoghue, put Roan Sweeney through and he spectacularly volleyed to the roof of the net. The visitors responded with a point, before Luke Buckley who proved a handful for the defence all through, finished low to the net. Caulry’s fast brand of football was posing problems for Green clas rearguard, and they were unlucky not to have added at least two more majors, but unfortunately shots from Adam and Rory Mullins, went millimetres either side of the post. A good piercing run through the opposition from Zach Nolan, resulted in a point to leave the half time score, 2-1 to 0-6.

The second half continued in much the same vein, but just when Caulry looked to have the upperhand, their potency to concede easy frees kept the visitors in the contest. When Zach Nolan saw black and Mullingar went into a one point lead, Caulry then showed their fighting spirit. With Thomas Dunning becoming more influential and James Clavin in inspired form, Dunning equalised. Rory Mullins now in defence was in defiant mode and with Glen Carolan, Luke Hamilton and Leroy Coughlan also making timely interventions, Caulry hung in. Two converted frees from Mullingar looked to have secured the points. However, a typical bursting run from Daniel Buckley reduced it to the minimum. A magnificent interception by Glen Carolan as the attacker bore down on goal, saw the ball transferred to Thomas Dunning who took off on a lengthy solo run, which culminated in being unceremoniously hauled down some thirty metres out. Despite kicking into the teeth of the breeze, Adam Donoghue showed the composure of a veteran and the accuracy of sharpshooter to equalise.

While on the balance of chances created, Caulry will feel they showed have taken both points on offer, they will also know that the required improvement in order to do so in within capability.

Division 4 ACFL

Caulry 0-10

Milltownpass 1-7

Caulry had to settle for a draw in their latest Division 4 ACFL fixture where they made the journey to Milltownpass on Saturday evening last.

Milltownpass raced out of the tracks with two quick points from play. Caulry were slow to settle and were guilty of early wides. Our lads found their feet on the 9^th minute with a well taken score from James Daly. Keith McMenamin pointed to draw level soon after. Despite some good defending from Charlie Parker and Ciaran Allen, the opposition kicked the next two scores of the game to take the lead. The game went on a point-for-point basis with Cialan Doallard and Stephen Brookes adding to the scoring tally to leave Caulry trailing 0-5 to 0-4 at the halftime whistle.

The opposition started the second half well as their goalie denied Caulry an early goal. The Milltownpass lads worked hard and pointed to stretch their lead on the 36^th minute. A point from Ben Kenny reduced the deficit. However, some good play from the opposition resulted in them rattling the back of our net. Our lads worked hard as the Milltownpass goalie brought off two more great saves. A pointed-free from Dollard left three points the margin by the 49^th minute. Ernie Buckley and Sylvester Coughlan kicked the next two scores of the game. Caulry drew level on the 54^th minute with a point from Daly after great defending from Sean Woods and Ciaran Allen. Milltownpass pointed late in the half to put one point between the sides. However, our defence held strong when put under pressure with Jack O’Kelly Lynch and Brookes valiant in their endeavours as Jack Connaughton sent over the equalising point to leave it level pegging with a final score of 0-10 to 1-7.

Caulry 4-8

Maryland 0-10

Caulry picked up another brace of points in this year’s Division 2 ACFL as they played host to Maryland on Sunday morning last.

The opposition started well with two points in quick succession. A pointed-free from Andy O’Sullivan got our lads off the mark on the 7^th minute. Sean Clinton defended well and after some good work from Emmet Nally and John Maguire, Gary Flanagan rattled the back of the Maryland net to put Caulry in front. Nally kept the scoreboard ticking over with a fine point from play. Some good combined teamwork from Nally, Flanagan and Maguire enabled O’Sullivan to register Caulry’s second goal of the morning. The Maryland lads worked hard and chipped away at the deficit with two unanswered points. Some great defending from Harry Hughes enabled Damien Dolan to point on the 19^th minute. Maryland pointed from a free as our lads missed a goal opportunity at the other end of the field. Sean Clinton had a superb game in defence as a point from Eoin Fox put five points between the sides. A late pointed-free for Maryland left Caulry leading 2-4 to 0-6 at the interval.

On the resumption, an early goal from O’Sullivan put Caulry in the driving seat after a superb pass in from Flanagan. Maryland narrowed the margins between the sides with two quick scores. However, Caulry responded well with points from Conor McCormack and Alan Daly. Cillian Nagle done well when called upon as another pointed-free for Maryland left six points the margin. Kevin Maguire fielded well enabling Daly to rattle the back of the Maryland net on the 54^th minute. James Pettit defended well in the late stages of the game as further scores from McCormack and Flanagan meant Caulry ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-8 to 0-10.
