Caulry GAA PRO Notes 28th Sept 2014 -

This squad of players have put in a hugh effort in pursuit of the holy grail over a long number of years, and while sentiment would say we deserve one at this stage, sport does not work like that and our players must go and produce arguably the performance of the careers to bring home the Geraghty Cup. Both sides parade very young squads, although Caulry’s recent final appearance should give them the crucial edge in experience. However, their well drilled opponents, Rosemount are renowned championship competitors. In order to achieve victory, Caulry will have to disrupt the black and amber game plan and play their own.

With three local teams in Caulry, Rosemount and Moate in action on Sunday, this is a special day out for the local and general area and no doubt all Caulry supporters will be out in force to cheer on men in red and white.

Under 14 Championship Division 1

Caulry 4-9

Mullingar Shamrocks 6-8

Caulry and Mullingar Shamrocks played out a thrilling and incident packed under 14 championship match in the local park on Saturday last.

Caulry played some superb combined attaching football finished off with quality scores, however the concession of five fortuitous goals allied to a missed penalty and two disallowed goals proved their ultimate undoing. Despite trailing by twelve points our lads made a remarkable recovery to lead by two points and seemed to be on their way to victory as we entered the closing stages, however two goals within a minute dealt us a fatal blow.

Even then the Caulry boys showed great character and were unlucky to have a disallowed goal in addition to another missed opportunity as time ran out. This is arguably one of the best squad of players in their age group, but luck was never on their side this year, both in terms of games and injuries.

While they exit the championship race for this year, they will be no doubt a force in the coming years, with the majority already have one or two county schools winners medals to their credit and Westmeath underage experience. This was a great team performance even in defeat. The older squad members like Jack Sheehan, Eoin Shortall, Darren Browne, Neil Clinton, Sean Fox, Liam Doyle , Shane Cleary and Colin Murphy have played magnificent football throughout various stages of the year and showed great leadership, while the absence through injury has given young members like Zach Nolan, Glen Carolan and Daniel Buckley the chance to develop with quality game time and this should prove very beneficial in the future.
