U13 Championship Shield Final
Caulry 1-11
Tubberclair 2-7
Our U13 boys were crowned Shield champions when they overcame a well-matched Tubberclair side on Saturday morning last. Having been beaten by the narrowest of margins in the league stages of the championship, the Caulry boys showed great determination to get over the line at the second time of asking.
Cian Malone done well in the opening minutes of the game, diffusing of a lingering Tubberclair threat as Lee Corcoran converted a free at the other end of the field to open the scoring account. Tubberclair drew level on the 9th minute with their first point of the game. But, points from Corcoran and Simon O’Grady soon had Caulry back in front. Tubberclair managed to find the net after 13 minutes and a pointed-free moments later saw them race into a two-point lead. Another Tubberclair free preceded Caulry’s third point of the game, this coming from the boot of Brian Doyle as the Caulry boys worked the ball up from the kickout. A superb pass from Rory Hatton then found Fionn O’Donovan who booted for goal. This was ruled as a foot-block by the referee and O’Grady stood up and neatly converted the ensuing penalty to edge our boys in front by one. The homeside drew level courtesy of another pointed-free on the 24th minute. The next score of the game saw Corcoran add a point. However, a late Tubberclair goal left the homeside in front at the break on a scoreline of 2-4 to 1-5.
Tubberclair launched the first attack of the second half which trickled out wide before a point from Corcoran got Caulry motoring. O’Donovan tried his best up front but struggled to convert his chances against a packed Tubberclair defence. He eventually found space and finished with a point on the 42nd minute to level the game. The Tubberclair goalie brought off a fine save as what should have been a Caulry score set his forwards up for attack and they finished with a point. Two points from Corcoran reversed the one-point lead in favour of Caulry. But this was short-lived as the tenacious Tubberclair forwards fought for their equalising point which came on the 52nd minute. Both teams dug deep for the closing minutes of the game as the sides were eager for a win. Corcoran showed great vision when he took a short free to Max Nolan who sent over the winning score of the game and saw our lads the win on a scoreline of 1-11 to 2-7.
After the game, joint-captains Michael McSharry and Lee Corcoran were presented with the Shield by Ollie Baker.
Well done to the boys and their coaches Bernard Corcoran, Ray McSharry, Leo Buckley, Colin Hatton, Thomas Ledwith, Robbie Ryan and Brian Mullarney.
