Caulry 6-10

Lilliput Gaels 4-7

Caulry welcomed the combination side of St Malachy’s/Ballinagore/Loughnavalley, Lilliput Gaels to our home pitch on Thursday last. On a breezy July evening, Caulry made it two wins from three starts over a plucky and game visiting side. Playing with the elements, Adam Donoghue, got us off to a good start with a well taken goal. He added a series of points with Thomas Dunning and Olan Healy added further goals and points to leave us 3-7 to 3-3 ahead at the interval.On the resumption of play, the visitors were quickly into their stride and added two points. Caulry composed themselves and replied with three of their own, before a goal and a point for Lilliput, left the bare minimum between them. However, comet the hour, comet the man, with Olan Healy once again bursting through for an inspirational goal. ‘Scoring machine’ Adam Donoghue then confidently converted a penalty to put some daylight between the sides. With Colm Shortall and Zach Nolan having their best games of the year in defence, coupled with great fielding from Thomas Dunning, this steadied the ship. A well worked sixth goal from Alan Malynn was the coup the grace on a well merited victory. This was a big improvement on the previous outing and apart from those already mentioned, Ciaran Gaynor, Daniel Buckley and Jamie Conlon really came into their own when the game was there to be won. Finally, the quality of the squad was also very much in evidence and hardly a coincidence that the second half improvement was due in no small way to the introduction and individual contributions of James Buckley and Shane Lawless.

Father Manning Cup

Congratulations and well done to the players and management of the Westmeath Under 16 squad who captured the Father Manning Cup last Wednesday evening. Hopefully this is the stepping stone to future honours for the Maroon and White.

Junior Championship

Caulry 0-3

Mullingar Shamrocks 1-14

Caulry played host to Mullingar Shamrocks on Friday evening last and went down very tamely to the opposition.

Mullingar hit the ground running with an early point, which was shortly followed by Caulry’s only point from play by Harry Hughes. Caulry were served well by Cillian Nagel in goal as he brought of two great saves in the opening ten minutes. A pointed free from Stephen Woods on the quarter hour mark meant it was level pegging. However, Mullingar worked hard and led 0-6 to 0-2 at the interval.

On the resumption, Mullingar began to dominate proceedings as they built up a commanding lead. The visitors were the much better team throughout the second half and kicked some fine scores for a deserved victory. The Caulry lads tried hard against a good opposition, but unfortunately lacked the experience to win. Caulry’s only score of the second half came on the 27^th minute with a pointed free from Stephen Byrne. At the final whistle, the scoreboard read 1-14 to 0-3.

Senior Championship

Caulry 1-9

Bunbrosna 1-12

Caulry suffered their first defeat of this year’s senior championship as they travelled to Kinnegad on Saturday evening last to take on Bunbrosna.

Caulry hit the ground running and were 0-3 to 0-0 up within the opening five minutes. Bunbrosna got off the mark in the 8^th minute with a point from play, which was shortly followed by a pointed free from Alan Fitzpatrick. Caulry began to build up a commanding lead after a brilliant pass from Fitzpatrick enabled Paddy Sleator to hit the back of the Bunbrosna net. Bunbrosna kicked the next two scores of the game, both from frees. The teams traded scores, with Eoin Fox and Damien Dolan pointing for Caulry, to leave Caulry leading 1-7 to 0-4 at the interval.

On the resumption, Caulry seemed to sit back and allow the opposition back into the game as Bunbrosna kicked two quick scores to narrow the deficit. Gary Flanagan pointed for Caulry on the 34^th minute. However, the all-important score of the evening came on the 35^th minute as Bunbrosna hit the back of the Caulry net to leave just two points between the sides. A pointed-free and point from play for Bunbrosna meant it was level pegging just inside the third quarter. Bunbrosna began to dominate proceedings as they stretched their lead to two points. David Brookes pointed for Caulry. However, two late points for Bunbrosna and missed chances for Caulry secured the opposition the win, on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-9.
