Minor League

Caulry 1-6

Athlone 3-6

The minor squad played host to Athlone in their first outing of this year’s league. Caulry, with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half, started strong with a well-taken goal by Emmet Nally and point from Stephen Byrne. However, Athlone worked hard and led by a point at the interval, on a scoreline of 1-3 to 1-2.

Athlone began to push on and hit the back of the Caulry net for the third time. However, the Caulry lads worked well as a team and never gave up until the final whistle. Late points from Stephen Connolly and Conor McCormack meant the match finished on a scoreline of 1-6 to 3-6.

Division 4 ACFL

Caulry 1-9

Castledaly 0-13

Caulry travelled to Castledaly on Friday last in their third outing of this year’s Division 4 ACFL and went down by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-13.

Both teams were slow to settle and were guilty of early misses. A well-taken goal from Alan Carroll got Caulry on their way. Points from Hugh Allen and Harry Hughes left one point between the sides at the interval, on a scoreline of 1-3 to 5.

On the resumption Castledaly worked hard and within minutes the scoreboard read 1-3 to 7 points. This lead was shortly lived as points from Gavin Byrne, Alan Carroll and Micky Fitzpatrick gave Caulry a lead of two points. Castledaly never gave up and by the end of the third quarter it was level pegging. The match continued on a point for point basis with Castledaly edging out Caulry on a final score of 1-9 to 0-13.

Last week, Caulry GAA Website reached a big milestone when it has it's One Hundred Thousand Visitor.

Under 14 Football

League Division 1

Caulry 1-5

Moate 0-9

Caulry travelled to Moate on Holy Thursday evening for their opening encounter in the Under 14 league. Despite the absence of a number of players due to Easter time of the year and other factors, in addition to the lack of match practise the young and lighter Caulry side made light of these and the wet conditions to record some excellent scores in the opening period. However, the bigger and more physical Moate side ground out a win in the dying moments, when a draw might have been a fairer reward for both sets of players who produced an enthralling and competitive contest. James Clavin gave an exhibition of goalkeeping all through with Rory Mullins doing likewise in defence. Luke Hamilton and Roan Sweeney were also in top form, while Sean Malone top scored in his first start at this level. Josh Jocker and Ciaran Gaynor also gave good first defensive displays at this grade. Finally a word of thanks to all the Under 12 players who rallied to the cause at short notice and will no doubt benefit from the experience.

Caulry 3-7 Tubberclair 0-3

On Easter Saturday morning last the same squad of players made their way to Pairc Chiarian Athlone for the blitz group stages of the Westmeath Feile Peil Na Nog. Grouped with Milltownpass, Tubberclair and the host side, Caulry sat out the first fixture as Milltownpass withdrew due to holidays absentees and Athlone overcame Tubberclair. Played on a round robin fifteen minutes a half, Caulry then took on Athlone. The evenly contested first five minutes gave little indication of what the next five would bring, as Roan Sweeney effectively blitzed the home team in as many minutes with a five goal personal salvo. Each one a master class in finishing after brilliant execution passes from Luke Buckley and Thomas Dunning every time. With James Clavin, Rory Mullins and Daniel Buckley rock solid in defence and Luke Hamilton and James Carey dictating the midfield area, Caulry eased their way through the second period for a good victory.

In their second match Caulry were slow to get going as the Tubberclair men made the early running. However, the eager beaver Olan Healy kept his team going with a goal and a point in the first half. On the resumption of play, the Caulry boys opened up to display their attractive brand of football, with top class scores from Luke Buckley, young Senan Baker and top ended by another exquisite Roan Sweeney three pointer. This allowed Caulry to qualify for the quarter finals next weekend.

Sympathy

The Caulry club wish to extend its sympathy to the family and friends of the Late Denis Coyne, Kinnegad who sadly passed away last week. Denis held many positions on the Westmeath GAA Executive over the years and we are grateful for his assistance on many occasions.
