Fr. Pat

The very best of luck to Fr. Pat Kiernan on his appointment as parish priest in Edgeworthstown. Throughout Fr. Pat’s fifteen years in Mount Temple, he expressed a fond interest in the club. Fr. Pat was very much involved in the running of the club as he served as a vice-president for a number of years. He is also known for his speed as he played half-forward and midfield in 2000.

Minor Championship

Caulry 1-12

Mullingar Shamrocks 0-9

Caulry got off to a winning start in their first game of this year’s Minor Championship on Wednesday evening last as they played host to Mullingar Shamrocks.

Caulry hit the ground running with two quick points from Conor McCormack and Stephen Byrne. After a couple of missed opportunities, Mullingar Shamrocks got off the mark on the 8^th minute with a point from play. An attempt from Emmet Nally, which was tapped over the bar by Paddy Sleator, and a pointed-free from McCormack left two points between the sides on the quarter hour mark. Shamrocks kicked the next two scores of the game. Caulry went three points ahead with Byrne (free), Sean Clinton and Sleator all on target. The teams traded scores before the interval to leave Caulry leading 0-8 to 0-6.

A fine point from McCormack just 60 seconds into the second half stretched Caulry’s lead. This was soon followed by a Shamrock’s point. However, the all-important score of the evening came on the 40^th minute when Irwyn Griffin rattled the back of the Mullingar net. The Caulry defence held tight, with Aaron Roarke, Darren Hynds and Charlie Parker having impressive displays. Late points from Stephen Connolly and Nally ensured Caulry a comfortable win with six points to spare at the final whistle.

Under 14 Championship Division 2

Caulry v Multyfarnham

Multyfarnham 2-5

Caulry had Multyfarnham as visitors on Tuesday week last for this latest Under 14 championship fixture. On a dry but very blustery evening our lads made a very good start and led 2-5 to 0-1 after 12 minutes of play. However, our fluid attacking play dried up and Multy came right back into the game and only trailed 2-5 to 2-3 at the interval. Any hopes of a good start to the second period were dashed as the visitors adopted a Northern style defensive strategy and packed their defence. Despite laying siege to the opposition goal, we could only tag on three points while Multy relied on the counter attack, which looked very dangerous on occasion. However, Caulry were lucky that Glenn Carolan was in top form and his ability to read and snuff out danger were paramount in subduing the visitors breakaways. He got good support in the back line from Ciaran Gaynor, Colm Shortall and Zach Nolan. Olan Healy was inspirational in midfield, alongside James Carey who won a lot of possession. Jamie Conlon and Thomas Dunning once again made the ‘hard yards’ in attack, where Adam Donoghue was thankfully in scoring form and instrumental in securing the vital points on offer.

Caulry v Athlone

On the following Thursday evening Caulry went to Pairc Chiarian Athlone for their final group championship match knowing that a win would qualify them for a semi-final spot. An early goal from Luke Buckley set them on their way, but Athlone responded well and mid-way through the half, Caulry led 2-6 to 0-6. However, a scoring burst from our lads which yielded a further 4-5 before the interval effectively put the contest to bed. On the resumption of play Caulry continued to dominate in all sectors. With the home side already out of the knock-out running, Caulry cruised to the knock out stages as the Athlone challenge understandably faded. In a good all round performance by the Caulry boys, Luke Hamilton, Colm Shortall, Zach Nolan, Jamie Conlon, Luke Buckley and Adam Donoghue stood out.

Under 16 Championship

Caulry 3-6

Shandonagh 4-13

Caulry made the journey to Shandonagh on Monday week last for this latest Under 16 championship fixture. With both sides having lost their opening game, a good competitive match ensued with each side having brief bouts of supremacy. We trailed 1-9 to 1-3 at the interval, but this did not take account of the equality of territory. However, the home side took the better options in attack. Caulry took the game to their opponents on the changeover and only trailed by two points with five minutes to go. With a goal chance on, a mix up in attach, led to a crucial turnover. From this Shandonagh scored a goal and registered a further 1-2 as our challenge faded and gave the scoreline a rather unfortunate lop- sided reading from our point of view. Caulry were best served in defence by Darren Browne, Eoin Shortall and Sean Fox. Sam Nolan had an excellent hour in midfield with high fielding a feature of his play. Cillian Dollard and Liam Malynn took their scores well in attack.
