Maryland 3-10

Caulry were brought back down to earth when they travelled to play Maryland on May Bank Holiday Monday. Having defeated table toppers Athlone in the previous outing hopes were high for another victory against winless Maryland. With former manager Brendan Clarke now in the blue dug-out and both sides shorn of their county players, this added another dimension to the encounter. However the men in red never got going, while their work rate and tactical naivety left a lot to be desired. Maryland’s greater endeavours in these aspects left them deserving winners at the finish. Best on the day for Caulry were James Pettit, Ernie Buckley and Eoghan Grennan.

St Lomans Mullingar 1-11

Reining Senior County champions St Lomans were the latest visitors to pitch for this all important league fixture. Both sides were short a number of regulars, while the constant rainfall during the day left pools of water and the pitch in almost unplayable state in parts. The visitors adapted better to the conditions and led five points to one at the break. Favoured by the wind on the resumption, Caulry made spirited efforts and were unlucky not to have been in front, instead of behind by three points with twelve minutes to go. However, a basic error in attack, which resulted in a quick counter attack resulted in the concession of a goal which was ultimately the turning point. The blues quickly added a couple of points and it was game over. Our best performers were James Pettit, Michael McMahon, Declan Donoghue, Alan Fitzpatrick, Robbie Hickey and Alan Daly.

Reflection

With only two victories from six matches, Caulry are finding the going tough in the top division where any errors or lack of concentration is ruthlessly punished. However, it will be a good education, once lessons are learned and no doubt Francie Grehan and his management team will work tirelessly on the training ground to instil these messages over the coming weeks. The return to action of players like, Kevin Maguire, Damian Dolan, Ben Moran, David Brookes, Peter Smyth, Ernie Buckley, Jack O Kelly-Lynch and Sean Doyle will also be a big help as few clubs could be without such quality, and not be negatively impacted .

Under 16 League

Caulry 7-10

Inny Gaels 0-8

Caulry Under 16s continued their league winning ways with another comprehensive victory, this time against Inny Gaels (a combination of Castletown Coole Whitehall and Bunbrosna). Played at home on Monday week last, Caulry were dominant in all sectors throughout, in particular Darren Hynds and Sean Clinton at the back and Jack Connaughton and Liam Malynn scoring freely in attack.

Caulry suffered their first defeat in four outings when surprisingly going down meekly to the visitors Garrycastle on Thursday evening last. Even allowing for a number of absentees this was a very poor display, with only James Clavin, Darren Browne, Sean Fox and Thomas Dunning coming anywhere near the required levels.

Caulry 5-5

Shandonagh 2-4

The U14 winning streak continues for this great team as they travelled to Shandonagh last Tues evening for the second round of the league. The wet weather did not dampen the spirit as they took on Shandonagh`s twelve players. Having to work harder with less on the field was a welcome challenge and Caulry set the pace in the first minute with a lovely goal from Leah Quigley. That was followed by a succession of goals and points from Britney McGuire,Emma Farrell and Lauren Claffey.

Some great saves were made by Aoibhinn McKnight who was under pressure on a couple of occasions while Aishling Gaynor as ever kept the pace going mid field.

Orlaith Holloway,Shannon Murray and Jasmine Maloney were a force to be reckoned with on the backline. Shandonagh came back strong in the second half and secured some scores but a late goal from Molly Connaughton meant that Caulry were on top.

Under 12 League

The Caulry Under 12 footballers have made a good start to the league with comprehensive victories over Moate and Garrycastle respectively in their two outings to date played under the Go Games model with each club fielding two teams. The determination and team work was very evident and they seemed to have done a lot more work on the training ground than both their opponents.
