Athlone 6-14

Our junior sided suffered a second consecutive defeat in this year’s Division 4 ACFL when they made the journey to Páirc Chiaráin on Tuesday evening last.

Our lads were first off the mark after nice combined teamwork from Adam Mullins and Peter Smyth set Anthony Allen up for a point inside the opening 60 seconds. Athlone soon followed suit with a fisted effort of their own. The homeside then took charge of proceedings as they rattled the back of the Caulry net on the 3^rd minute. Smyth drew one back with a converted-free. However, Athlone began to dominate proceedings as they pushed on adding an unanswered 1-4. The teams then traded points between the 16^th and 20^th minutes with Smyth and Jack O’Kelly Lynch on target for Caulry. Cillian Nagle brought off a good save on the 21^st minute. However, the opposition continued on their scoring ways as they added on 1-2. Alan Daly tried hard and laid the ball off to Smyth who hit the back of the Athlone net on the 24^th minute. Athlone responded well with a goal of their own. Ernie Buckley worked hard in defence as late points from Conor Dolan and Daly left the scoreboard reading 4-9 to 1-6 at the halftime whistle.

On the resumption, two points from Smyth chipped away at the deficit. The Athlone goalie then denied Caulry a goal on the 36^th minute as his side raced up the field and slotted over a fine point from play. Smyth fielded well, combining with Allen who found Brookes who riffled the opposition’s net on the 40^th minute. Andy O’Sullivan reduced the deficit with a converted-free. However, Caulry were then dealt a blow as the opposition registered their fifth goal of the evening. Our lads responded well as O’Sullivan then sent the ball to the back of the Athlone net at the end of the third quarter. The opposition kept their lead in tact with three unanswered points. O’Sullivan tried hard against the opposition, with his work paying dividends as he registered Caulry’s fourth goal of the match. O’Sullivan’s initial attempt at a hattrick was denied by the Athlone goalie on the 57^th minute. However, he dug deep and riffled the opposition’s net to get his hattrick on the 60^th minute. A late goal for Athlone deep into injury time ensured them the win on a scoreline of 6-14 to 5-9.

Killucan 2-3

Our U16s wrapped up their league campaign with a comprehensive win over Killucan in the local park on a wet Thursday evening last.

Our boys burst out of the tracks with two quick goals from James Buckley and James Carey inside the opening 10 minutes. Ruiari Casey brought off a good save as a converted-free from Alan Malynn put Caulry seven points the good. A good kickout from Casey found Rory Mullins who combined well with Carey to set Buckley up for his second goal of the game. Ciaran Gaynor impressed in defence as further points from Malynn stretched the margins between the sides. The Caulry boys worked well as a team as Senan Baker put his name on the scoresheet with two quick points on the 24^th and 25^th minutes. A converted penalty late in the half got Killucan off the mark. The Killucan boys tried hard and registered their second goal of the game with a fisted effort to leave them trailing 3-5 to 2-0 at the halftime whistle.

The second half followed in much the same vein with our boys dominating throughout. Some great defending from Colm Shortall enabled Rory Mullins to rattle the opposition’s net on the 34^th minute. The teams then traded scores with Baker on target for Caulry. Luke Buckley worked hard as his pass found Mullins who added to the scoring tally. Our boys then went on a quick scoring blitz which yielded an unanswered 1-3 between the 37^th and 41^st minutes. Killucan drew one back with a fine point from play. However, Luke Buckley responded well as he sent the ball to the back of the net. The Killucan goalie brought off a brace of saves throughout the second half as his side reduced the margins with a converted-free. Alex Grinko done well when introduced as he played a key role in setting Buckley and Carey up for their respective scores on the 49^th and 53^rd minutes. Buckley sent a fine ball into the Caulry forward line which as nicely helped over the bar by Roan Sweeney. Late points from Sweeney and Carey meant Caulry ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 8-13 to 2-3.
