Glory at last

At sunny Cusack Park Mullingar, on Saturday morning last, September 26th, Caulry ended a 15 year underage championship drought by annexing the Under 14 Championship with great skill and work rate. Tyrrellspass won the throw in and attacked the town end, but the Caulry rear-guard stood firm and from the resulting attack swift movement of the ball, gave Luke Buckley the opportunity to finish to the net with aplomb. Sensing blood, the well drilled boys in red went for the jugular. In an almost identical move moments later, Adam Donoghue cut in from the left but shot into the side netting. However, the Caulry boys were hungry and Tyrrellspass were struggling with their constant movement and it was no surprise, when next time Adam Donoghue got the ball he finished high to the net after racing through, this time from the right hand side of the pitch. To their credit Tyrrellspass gradually worked their way into the contest with some fine points of their own as Caulry continued to press for goals when points might have been a better option. A beautifully taken point off his left foot by Luke Buckley got us going again. A succession of markers were finding it difficult to cope with the power and pace of Adam Donoghue as he brilliantly crossed for Rory Mullins to palm to the net. Adam soon followed this up with another goal and Jamie Conlon a lovely point. James Clavin then brought off a superb one handed diving save to deny a much needed goal for the boys in sky blue and leave the half-time score 4-2 to 0-6.
As expected Tyrrellspass came out all guns blazing on the resumption and tacked on some excellent points. Caulry then proceeded to use their bench astutely as Alan Malynn and Senan Baker made vital contributions winning possession to relieve tired legs, in additional to some positional adjustments. Their opponents needed a goal to really cut the deficit. However, James Clavin was in inspired and defiant mood as he made a variety of saves and catches, and Thomas Dunning and Ciarian Gaynor were heroic with a series of blocks. While Tyrrellspass persisted in going up the centre channel, the great variety of Caulry’s play began to tell and instead it was Caulry who got the next major. Another move the length of the pitch finished with Roan Sweeney on the end of it. When you need him, Roan doesn’t miss those as he calmly slotted to the net and put an end to the Tyrrellspass challenge and set in motion some jubilant scenes.
Well done to all the panel who put in a huge amount of commitment and dedication throughout the year. There were excellent performances all over the field on Saturday last. Once again James Clavin proved himself an inspiring presence and captain. The full back-line of Ciarian Gaynor, Glenn Carolan and Tom Cloonan performed all aspects of defensive duties, tackling, blocking, reading with solid efficiency. The half line of Colin Shortall, Daniel Buckley and Zach Nolan were tenacious and fearless in their endeavours. At midfield, the little man with the big heart, Olan Healy took the hits and came back for more with interest. His partner, James Carey strode the park in gazelle like mode with some fine fetches to match. The engine room that is the half forward division were exactly that. Jamie Conlon, Thomas Dunning and Roan Sweeney were all over Cusack Park as they displayed their full range of speed, stamina, catching, turn-overs and finishing to break up opposition attacks and set their own in motion. With good quick supply and space, Luke Buckley, Rory Mullins and the unmarkable Adam Donoghue were always going to be difficult to stop and so it proved as they amassed the bulk of the winner’s total. What really set our lads apart in the business end however, was the quality of the overall panel, which was very evidenced in both the semi-final and final and testament to good management and nurturing.

Speedy Recovery
All in the club wish one of our under 14 stars, Luke Hamilton a speedy recovery from a fractured femur. Unfortunately Luke had to sit out Saturday’s victory after giving great displays in the lead up to the final.
