All Ireland Football Final Tickets Draw
Caulry are holding an All Ireland Football Final Tickets Draw on Friday 15th September 2017 in Egan’s Pub, Mount Temple. There are lots of prizes up for grabs on the night including four tickets for the All Ireland Football Final. Tickets are €5 each or €10 for a book of three and are available from any committee member and Kieran’s shop, Mount Temple.
U10 Blitz
Last week Caulry U10's travelled to Ballynacargy to take part in the Matt Slevin Memorial Tournament. After an unlucky start, they made their way to the shield final. They saved their best performance to last coming out on top against a strong Lilliput Gaels side. Well done boys. I think it’s fair to say that the future looks bright for all these players

U16 Championship Division 2 Quarter-Final

Kilbeggan/St Joseph’s 3-5
Kilbeggan/St Joseph’s were the visitors to a well attended home venue on Monday evening last. Having come out on the wrong side of results against this opposition in recent encounters, our lads started as if on a mission. Despite being up against his fellow county colleagues, Thomas Dunning together with the ‘Duracell bunny’ like Olan Healy completely dominated the middle third, providing amble possession for the skilful inside trio of Roan Sweeney, Luke Buckley and Adam Donoghue to weave their magic. An early point from Roan was followed by a free from Adam before Kilbeggan/St Joseph’s replied with a pointed free. An intricate move involving Olan Healy and the three lads, left Roan Sweeney in on goal for a classy finish. Thomas Dunning made a great fetch and then showed great vision to pick out Rory Mullins who finished with a powerful fist for goal number two. With the visitors reeling, Caulry went for the jugular and introduced Senan Baker. Twice in as many minutes, Senan proved his X-factor class, using his searing speed to rip through the defence for quality finishes. A converted 45 by Thomas Dunning was followed by expertly judged points from Adam Donoghue. James Carey the rounded off the first half scoring when he got on the end of another good passing movement, before blasting to the roof of the net. The half time whistle brought the only respite for the shell shocked visitors, with the scoreline reading 5-7 to 0-2.
As expected Kilbeggan/St Joseph’s to their credit through everything at us on the resumption and took their opportunities well. Our lads were guilty of taking the wrong option and over elaboration which looked as if it might result in an unlikely comeback. Thankfully, a quality point from Alan Malynn, was followed by an emphatic shot to roof of the net by the hard working Rory Mullins to finally seal victory. Apart from those already mentioned, special praise must go Luke Hamilton for a superb defensive performance, while Ciaran Gaynor’s linking of defence and attack belied his tender years.
Caulry now play Shandonagh in the semi-final were they will have to improve on the second half performance if they are to make the final.

U14 Championship

Kilbeggan/Josephs 3-7
Our U14 boys had a good win over Kilbeggan/Josephs on Thursday evening last in the local park for their final group stage game in this year’s championship.
The Caulry boys raced out of the tracks with a well-taken goal from Alan Malynn after a good pass from Senan Baker. The visitors drew one back with a point from play on the 6th minute. However, our lads worked tirelessly with goals from Harry Stuart Trainor and Baker. Malynn pointed to leave nine points between the sides on the 11th minute. Ruiari Casey brought off a good save in goals as Kilbeggan/Josephs had to settle for a point. Ben Claffey and Tom Cloonan defended well as Shane Lawless added to the scoring tally. The Caulry boys began to push on after some good combined teamwork from Baker and Oisin Shortall set up Malynn for his second and third goal of the evening on the 22nd and 28th minute respectively. The opposition finished the half well with two unanswered points to leave Caulry leading 5-2 to 0-4 at the break.
The second half followed in much the same vein with Caulry dominating throughout. Senan Baker kicked the opening score of the half just 50 seconds after the resumption. Malynn and Andrew Stuart Trainor kicked a brace of scores to help Caulry to build up a commanding lead. The teams exchanged points to leave Caulry leading 6-6 to 0-6 by the end of the third quarter. Our boys worked hard as Malynn and Sean Murphy added to Caulry’s lead. The Kilbeggan/Josephs’ boys dug deep and showed a never-say-die attitude as they kicked an unanswered 3-0 to leave Caulry leading 7-7 to 3-7 at the fulltime whistle.

U12 Garrycastle Tournament
Our U12 boys made the short journey to Tubberclair on Friday evening last for their second game of this year’s Garrycastle Tournament.
The opposition started the game well with a fine point from play. However, our boys soon found their feet after Dean Byrne rattled the back of the Tubberclair net on the 2nd minute. Aaron Murphy and Darragh Shortall defended well when put under pressure by the Tubberclair forwards. Some good play from David Gaynor and Oisin Shortall resulted in Tadgh Baker registering his first point of the match. Ian Malone brought off a number of good saves in goal as points from Andrew Stuart Trainor, Shortall and Byrne allowed our lads to push on. Cody Parker put his name on the scoreboard with a well taken goal on the 22nd minute. Tiarnan O’Donovan and Brendan Kelly McCormack combined well as another point from Baker gave Caulry a comfortable lead at the halftime whistle.
Cian Lawless worked hard as our lads pushed on with fine scores from Tiarnan and Brendan. However, the Tubberclair boys never gave up, kicking two quick goals to reduce the deficit. Ultimately, our boys had done enough as late scores from Stuart Trainor, Baker, Tiarnan and Conor Hynes secured Caulry’s win on the evening.

U8 Blitz
Although the weekend was a disappointing one for Caulry with the relegation of our senior team on Saturday, the fun, games and great progress continued for our U-8s earlier on Saturday when we hosted a blitz at the pitch. The opposition was provided by Tubberclair and The Downs – both fielding 2 teams each while we fielded 4 teams. All teams played 3 x 20 minute games with the Caulry boys once again putting on great displays of skill and endeavour with many of the principles worked on the training pitch coming to the fore: near-hand tackle, hook kicks, punt kicks, etc.
With refreshments provided to all players after the game and tea and home-baked treats provided for parents in the club-house, it was a great morning all-round.
Training continues for the U-8’s on Thursday evenings at 6:30. Let’s keep the great attendance up until we finish for the year in late September / early October.
Senior Championship Relegation Play-off
Caulry 1-9
Maryland 0-13
Despite picking up two wins in their final two group-stage games of this year’s SFC, our lads found themselves in a relegation play-off against Maryland in Tubberclair on Saturday last where a hungrier opposition edged out Caulry on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-9.
Maryland started the game well with a converted-free inside the opening 60 seconds. Emmet Nally drew level on the 3rd minute after some good work from Paddy Sleator. Points from Conor McCormack and Andy O’Sullivan edged Caulry in front by the 5th minute. Maryland drew one back with a fine point from play. Kevin Maguire worked hard at midfield as a converted ‘45’ from Peter Smyth left two points the margin. However, Maryland kicked two unanswered points to draw level on the 17th minute at 4 points apiece. Damien Dolan defended well as another Smyth ‘45’ put Caulry’s noses in front. Our lads missed some scoring chances as Maryland levelled proceedings for a third time. Gary Flanagan and Andy O’Sullivan combined well as points from Maguire and Smyth saw Caulry lead 0-7 to 0-5 at the interval.
Our lads sat back and were slow to settle early in the second half as Maryland kicked eight unanswered points to lead by five by the end of the third quarter. Smyth opened Caulry’s second half tally on the 50th minute with a pointed-free. Our lads were unlucky to miss some goal opportunities as Maryland pointed to cushion their lead. An injured Alan Fitzpatrick entered the field in the late stages of the game and kicked 1-1 to leave just one point between the sides late into injury time. Ultimately, our lads failed to push on in the second half as Maryland ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-9.

After this unlucky defeat to Maryland, our lads return to the Intermediate Championship for the 2018 campaign. It was a huge year of football for our lads. Despite having a sluggish start to the championship with narrow defeats to The Downs, Castledaly and Rosemount, our lads really dug deep and notched up good wins over Maryland and Coralstown/Kinnegad and were unfortunate to find themselves in the relegation play-off. Well done to our lads for their hard work and Trojan efforts throughout the year and a huge thanks to the management team of Gordon McDonnell, Jody Malynn, Ronan Carroll and Brian Mullarney.
