Division 2 ACFL
Caulry 4-14
The Downs 5-8
Our lads picked up their fourth consecutive win in this year’s Division 2 ACFL when they made the journey to The Downs on Tuesday evening last.
The game began with a stop-start passage of play before Conor McCormack opened the scoring account with a converted-free on the 4th minute. The Downs kicked two wides before racing into the lead after rattling the back of the Caulry net soon after. Dylan Lowry showed well in defence as the team traded wides. A point for the opposition on the 9th minute then got them back on track as this was followed-up up nicely by two quick-fire goals to leave the homeside nine points the good. Both teams were guilty of wides again as the next score of the game came from another McCormack free, this a short-range effort. The Downs launched the next three attacks, only one of which was successful (converted ‘45’). Liam Malynn replied with a point on the 20th minute after some good play from Sean Clinton. Declan Donohoe then brought off a great catch at the centre of the field as he set Colin Murphy up for a score. With momentum in their favour, our lads began driving at The Downs’ defence with a goal from Murphy narrowing the gap between the sides. The Clinton brothers combined well out field as Murphy showed great composure to finish with another goal after his initial attempt was well blocked down. However, the opposition didn’t panic as they attacked the kickout and added an unanswered 1-1. A late point from Adam Donoghue after a fine pass from Eoin Fox saw Caulry trail 4-3 to 2-5 at the break.
The Downs were first to point early after the resumption of play. Our lads were patient in building their attack with Murphy finishing off a move with a fine point from play. Neil Clinton made a superb run through the opposition’s defence as a pass from Donoghue enabled him to hit the back of the net on the 32nd minute. McCormack then drew level after a foul on Alan Daly. Malynn edged Caulry in front on the 37th minute. However, the opposition replied with a point of their own. Sean Fox and Eoin Shortall worked tirelessly in the Caulry defence as points from Donohoe, Daly and Malynn left three between the sides. The Downs drew one back on the 46th minute before a Harry Hughes combined with Malynn who sent he ball to the bottom left-hand corner of the net. The teams then shared three points with Anthony Allen and McCormack on target for Caulry after some fine play from Clinton and Gary Flanagan. The opposition dug deep as their hard work paid off as they registered their fifth goal of the game on the 54th minute. Our defence applied good pressure in the closing stages of the game forcing the opposition into wides. A converted ‘45’ left The Downs trailing by just two. However, Peter Smyth showed no fault in the forward line as he kicked the closing point of the game securing our lads the win on a scoreline of 4-14 to 5-8.
