Division 4 ACFL
Caulry vs. Athlone
Caulry 4-10
Athlone 2-11
Our Division 4 side got off to a winning start in their league campaign on Friday evening last when they made the short journey to Athlone for this re-fixture.
The Caulry lads were slow to settle, with two attempts falling wide of the target before the homeside opened the scoring account after 2 minutes. Olan Healy and Thomas Dunning combined setting Healy up for Caulry’s first score of the game. Liam Malynn then tapped over a routine free before Dunning stretched our lead to two after Harry Hughes attacking from the opposition’s kickout. Athlone drew one back on the 7th minute with a pointed-free before experiencing a blight of unsuccessful attacks, which saw them miss three goal chances (the Caulry goalie James Clavin to be accredited for bringing off two fine saves during this period). However, it was the opposition who seemed to be better able to set up play as they kicked an unanswered 0-4 to take the lead. Two Caulry chances fell wide before Malynn got us back on track with another free. Hughes made a surge forward and found Dunning who combined nicely with Neil Clinton who helped the ball to the back of the Athlone net on the 23rd minute. The homeside levelled proceedings with a converted-free moments later. However, our lads responded in style with Dunning finishing to the net to leave our lads in front at the break on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-7.
Athlone burst out of the tracks in the second half and tapped over two points to narrow the deficit. Scores from Dunning and Adam Donoghue restored the Caulry lead. Dunning then got his fourth score of the game on the 35th minute, this coming from a fisted point. Clavin brought off another fine save as the Athlone forwards posed a constant threat, settling for a point on this occasion. However, they struck again moments later, this time not to be denied, and after adding another point soon after they edged in front as 40 minutes elapsed. Cialan Dollard drew level again. But the opposition dug deep and rattled the back of Clavin’s net for a second time. The Caulry lads done well as they kept their composure with Malynn drawing one back with another pointed-free. A shot from Malynn rebounded off the post as Donoghue made no mistake, sending the ball to the back of the net. Luke Buckley then had his share of the spoils as he shot for Caulry’s fourth goal of the game. Both defences worked hard in the closing stages of the game with Buckley eventually rounding off the scoring tally with a late ‘45’ conversion ensuring Caulry ran out winners on a scoreline of 4-10 to 2-11.

Caulry vs. Shandonagh
Caulry 1-12
Shandonagh 2-8
Our Division 4 side made it two wins from two when they notched up their second victory of the weekend after playing host to Shandonagh on Sunday morning last.
Caulry were first off the mark with Liam Malynn converting a free. This lead was short-lived as the visitors made the most of some sloppy Caulry possession and slotted over four unanswered points. The ball was then worked nicely up the field by Caulry, with Thomas Dunning finishing with a fine point from play. Our lads attacked from the kickout as points from Adam Donoghue and Sylvester Coughlan drew level. The opposition then edged in front on the quarter hour mark with another converted free. Our lads were again guilty of some sloppy play and were punished on the 16th minute as Shandonagh pounced on a Caulry mistake and riffled the back of the homeside’s net. Scores from Luke Buckley and Donoghue narrowed the deficit. However, it was Shandonagh who finished the half the stronger side, outscoring Caulry 1-2 to 0-1 to lead 2-7 to 0-7 at the break.
Buckley raced out of the tracks in the second half and sent over a fine point just 20 seconds into play. Two Shandonagh chances fell astray as our lads began to build momentum into their play. The next score of the game coming courtesy of this clever play as Buckley rounded off a fine move to the back of the Shandonagh net. Luke Hamilton worked tirelessly in defence as points from Malynn and Donoghue left it all-square on the 43rd minute. Shandonagh then kicked what turned out to be their only score of the second half to edge in front. However, Caulry never panicked and playing with an extra man (after a Shandonagh player seen red after receiving his second yellow) and with the wind on their backs, slogged away in the closing minutes of the game as Malynn converted two frees to edge us in front. The opposition then had a late chance to equalise, but on this occasion the free-kick fell wide of the target ensuring Caulry escaped with the win with the narrowest of margins between the sides.
