St Lomans Mullingar 3-14

A depleted Caulry travelled to Lakepoint Park Mullingar on Sunday week last to take on the home side. With the aid of a very strong wind, St Lomans built up a not insurmountable half time lead of 2-9 to 2-3. Already shorn of a number of players to injury, Caulry were dealt a major blow on the changeover, when their most efficient attacker, Roan Sweeney had to withdraw to injury. After the resumption a goal against the run of play effectively put the game out of reach as the blues closed up shop. Despite good displays against good teams in six challenge games to date, our lads have failed to carry this into what has been a disappointing league so far. However, special mention must go to our goalkeeper James Clavin who has been superb throughout. For the second consecutive game, not only did he save an excellent penalty, but his all contribution of one on one saves, high fielding and presence, marked him out as a man apart. Olan Healy also gave another wholehearted display, and the efforts of Roan Sweeney and Shane Hynes and point taking of Adam Donoghue were also praiseworthy.

With many of our players involved in the Junior Cycle exam, there will be a break from match action for the next few weeks, and we wish them all well in their exam endeavours.

Caulry vs. Milltownpass

Milltownpass 2-10

Caulry played host to Milltownpass on Tuesday evening last for their sixth game in this year’s Division 2 ACFL.

Caulry raced out of the tracks with a fine point from Gary Flanagan on the 2^nd minute. Andy O’Sullivan registered Caulry’s second point of the game soon after. James Pettit defended well as our lads were guilty of some wides. Milltownpass got off the mark on the 7^th minute with a pointed-free. The opposition levelled proceedings with a point from play. The opposition attacked well and took the lead with a well-taken goal on the 11^th minute. Damien Dolan kicked the next two scores of the game after some good work from Kevin Maguire. Milltownpass stretched their lead to three points on the 21^st minute. A superb pass from Robbie Hickey found Eoin Fox who pointed to reduce the deficit. John Maguire fielded well and enabled O’Sullivan to add to the scoring tally on the 23^rd minute. Fox kicked the next score of the game to leave it level pegging. However, Milltownpass responded well with two quick scores to leave Caulry trailing 1-6 to 0-7 at the halftime whistle.

On the resumption, a pointed-free from Conor McCormack narrowed the margins between the sides. However, Milltownpass went on a quick scoring blitz which yielded an unanswered 1-2 by the 37^th minute. Some trojan efforts in defence from Kevin Maguire and Damien Dolan enabled Fox to point for Caulry. The teams traded scores with Alan Fitzpatrick and Ben Kenny adding to the scoring tally. Dolan pointed on the 53^rd minute to leave just four points between the sides. Our lads tried hard against a good opposition and were in need of a goal. Two late pointed-frees from McCormack chipped away at the margins. Ultimately, our lads chased the deficit throughout as Milltownpass ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-14.

Caulry vs. Bunbrosna

Caulry and Bunbrosna served up an exciting encounter on Friday evening last in their latest Division 2 ACFL fixture.

Caulry were slow to settle and were guilty of early wides. Conor McCormack opened the scoring tally with a pointed-free on the 5^th minute. Andy O’Sullivan left two points between the sides after a good pass from Emmet Nally. Bunbrosna got off the mark on the 8^th minute as they had to settle for a point after Cillian Nagle brought off a good save. Some great work from Eoin Fox enabled John Maguire to stretch Caulry’s lead. The teams exchanged scores with Nally on target for Caulry. Bunbrosna were unlucky as they missed two goal scoring opportunities. However, some good defending from Damien Dolan and Declan Donohoe and a late point from Harry Hughes left Caulry leading 0-5 to 0-3 at the interval.

The opposition hit the ground running with two quick points early in the second half to leave it level pegging. A superb pass from Robbie Hickey found O’Sullivan who pointed to put Caulry’s noses in front. However, the Caulry lads seemed to sit back as Bunbrosna worked hard, kicking an unanswered five points to take the lead. Hickey kicked the next score of the game to reduce the deficit. Our defence done well when put under pressure with Donohoe and James Pettit valiant in their endeavours. A pointed-free from McCormack left just two points the margins with six minutes remaining. Our lads showed a never-say-die attitude as two late pressure frees from McCormack meant Caulry escaped with a draw on a final scoreline of 0-10 apiece.

U8 Blitz

Despite the very wet day and a lot of players unavailable, 17 young Caulry players once again done themselves and their club proud in our second blitz of the year at Athlone GAA on Saturday afternoon playing against Athlone and Tubberclair.

Training continues as normal on Thursday at 6:30pm where we usually have up to 30 players from our panel of 34.
