U14 Feile na nÓg
Our U14 boys had a very busy weekend as they played a series of games in this year’s Feile na nÓg.
First up, Caulry played host to Killucan on Saturday morning. Our boys raced out of the tracks early in the game with a fine point from Andrew Stuart Trainor. Alan Lynam impressed at midfield as a pointed-free from Stuart Trainor doubled the deficit between the sides. The Killucan forwards struggled to register a score against a strong Caulry defence, with Michael McDonald having a stand-out performance. Good play from Oisin Shortall and Paul Hogan set Tadgh Baker and Stuart Trainor up for two fine points. Killucan then got off the mark as they hit the back of the Caulry net. However, our boys responded well as Josh Rhattigan rattled the net for Caulry after good work from Tiarnan O’Donovan and Baker. Further points from Baker and Hogan secured our boys a quarter-final spot on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-0. Scorers in the Killucan game were as follows: Andrew Stuart Trainor (0-3, 1f), Josh Rhattigan (1-0) Tadgh Baker (0-2), and Paul Hogan (0-1, 1f).
Later in the evening, our boys then hosted a strong Lilliput Gaels side for the quarter-final stages of this year’s competition. The opposition hit the ground running with 1-1 inside the opening 60 seconds of the game. Our lads tried hard but struggled to get off the mark as Lilliput Gaels tapped over two more points. Paul Hogan then registered Caulry’s first score of the game with a converted-free. However, the opposition never seemed phased as they rallied on tapping over an unanswered 3-4. Tadgh Baker then drew one back with a fine point from play. The Lilliput Gaels goalie brought off a good save late in the second half as the teams traded points to leave Caulry trailing 4-8 to 0-3 at the fulltime whistle. Scorers in the Lilliput Gaels game were as follows: Paul Hogan (0-2, 2f) and Tadgh Baker (0-1).
After being defeated by Lilliput Gaels, our boys then qualified for the Division 2 semi-final against Athlone which will be played Monday at 7pm.

The Downs 6-20
A young Caulry team travelled to The Downs on Saturday evening last for the third round of minor league fixtures. While there is no doubt that the home team were superior and deserved victory, the score line hardly does justice to the Caulry lads. After an evenly contested early quarter, with a superb long range point from Dylan Lowry a highlight, Caulry lost talisman, Colin Murphy to a hamstring injury. This had a major unsettling effect and the Black and Amber men went on a scoring spree to lead 5-10 to 0-2 at the break.
On the resumption of Caulry led by an inspiring box to box highly effectual display by Thomas Dunning outscored the opposition by 3-6 to 1-10 for the remainder of the match. The youngest player on the pitch, Senan Baker, showed that age is no barrier to class, with an impressive 1-2 on his debut at this level, and in addition showed a vast repertoire of passing and movement. Another of our younger brigade, Olan Healy, caused endless problems for the home defence, and this trio combined for a number of our best passages of play, the first a typical classical finish by Roan Sweeney. Thomas and Senan worked well together with youngster showing bravery to finish to the net, and added two excellent points on the run. The tireless Neil Clinton, as always showing excellent application, then set up Olan Healy for a top notch fisted goal. Another of our under 16 squad, Ciaran Gaynor showed that he too belongs in this company with a confident display, while Luke Hamilton and Dylan Lowry also showed well in an overworked defence.
Finally while the result is a disappointment, this team has been down this road before and should the teams meet later in the year, the result and contest could be much closer after the return of some established players.
