2020 Club AGM
Our 2020 Annual General Meeting, which was originally deferred, took place via Microsoft Teams on Saturday, March 6th.
Outgoing chairman James Casey welcomed all to the virtual meet in what he deemed to be an ‘unusual situation’. A minute’s silence was then observed for all deceased members and their families during the year prior to the chairman’s address.
James opened his address by reflecting on one of the high points of the club year 2020 which was our dinner dance. He thanked all involved in organising and helping out with the night, a night which honoured our 2019 intermediate winning men’s team and ladies’ league winning team, and also marked the 50th anniversary of our 1969 IFC win. James then expressed gratitude to those involved in our senior management team for the 2020 season, including Sean Kelly, Jody Malynn and Declan Donohoe. He also praised and thanked Gary Flanagan who took over our senior team towards the latter stages of the year and commended the role he played in helping the lads keep their senior status for our 2021 campaign. James further thanked all who helped out in any way with the adult teams, including the junior management and ladies section. James spoke highly of how our underage structures grasped and overcame the ‘trying times’, a board lead by James Hatton and Irvine Allen, and thanked all who were involved in ensuring we provided a much-needed outlet for our youth during the year. James’ expressions of gratitude were further extended his co-officers, club sub-committees, sponsors, members and players. James complimented the ‘fruitful partnership’ our club continues to foster with our local schools at pre-school, primary and secondary level and he congratulated Donie Malone and Alan Fitzpatrick on their respective roles with Westmeath. James concluded by stating that although it was a trying season, we can look forward to seeing restrictions lift as we all yearn for long summer evenings in the park. He wished all incoming officers the very best for the year and signed off by expressing how it has been an honour to serve as chairman for the past 3 years.
The outgoing secretary’s report then followed. Keith Dolan reiterated many of the chairman’s sentiments. In particular, Keith accredited Westmeath county board for successfully running off a full championship programme despite the circumstances. He gave a round-up on all the matches and results during the year and Keith finished by congratulating the achievements of our U13 boys on winning the Shield final and the ladies on securing their intermediate status.
The outgoing treasurer Colin White’s report showed the financial challenges that 2020 brought with limited fundraising being possible. Despite the circumstances, there were some positives to be seen as Colin commended the introduction of our online lotto and he thanked all who continue to support it weekly. Colin thanked those who were involved in different initiatives during the year, namely James Hatton (club calendar & St. Stephen’s Day fun run), Jim & Julie Maguire (Get Active), Holly Maloney (2000km in aid of Mental Health Ireland) and Stephen Connolly & Cillian Nagle (Last Man Standing).
