U15 Division 3 Quarter-Final
Caulry 5-6
St. Lomans 4-6
Our U15 boys progress to the semi-final stages of this year’s Division 3 as they overcame St. Lomans in the park on a wet Tuesday evening last.
St. Lomans were first off the mark with a point from play after 5 minutes before Aaron Hanevy kicked our opening score of the game thanks to good fielding from Dean Martin. Both sides struggled to convert their chances in the difficult conditions as a St. Lomans free finished out the first quarter of the game. As evident from the scoreline, goals were as easy come-by as points in this game with the visitors booting home two quick-fire goals on the 18th and 20th minutes. Rory Hatton drew one of these back moments later as he pocketed the rebound ball from Fionn O’Donovan’s initial effort. Hugo McGowan then pointed to reduce the deficit to three. Two late points shared equally between the teams meant Caulry trailed at the break on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-3.
The opposition burst out of the tracks in the second half with 1-1 in quick succession. Brian Doyle was next to add to the scoring tally. St. Lomans converted two frees either side of Lee Corcoran’s goal on the 39th minute. The tide began to turn as the match neared the end of the third quarter as three Caulry scores put our boys four points the good. Firstly, Hanevy picked out the top corner of the net on the 42nd minute before Hatton shot for his second goal of the evening, and a pointed-free from Corcoran rounding off this purple patch. The St. Lomans boys never gave up as they reduced the gap to one with their fourth three-pointer of the game on the 57th minute. However, our lads responded in style as a fine ball in from Jack Killane set O’Donovan up for a goal. A late point from play from Hanevy secured our boys the win with three points to spare at the fulltime whistle.
Team & Scorers: Cian Malone, Luke Nolan, Kyle Byrne, Max Nolan, Eoin Lynam, Rory Hatton (2-0), Eoin McCormack, Dean Martin, Brian Doyle (0-1), Hugo McGowan (0-1), Aaron Hanevy (1-2), Lee Corcoran (1-1, 1f), Jack Killane, Fionn O’Donovan (1-1, 1f)
SFC Round 2
Caulry 4-9
Killucan 1-10
Our seniors picked up their first brace of points at the second time of asking when they battled it out against Killucan for Round 2 of this year’s senior championship on Saturday evening last.
The game began with a stop-start passage of play as the first three scores were pointed-frees, two in Caulry’s favour in which Alan Malynn neatly converted. Killucan threatened a goal on the 10th minute, but the Caulry defence diffused this threat as the opposition settled for a point from play. Senan Baker was fouled up front for Caulry and this play set Conor McCormack up for his first score of the game minutes later. A Killucan effort dropped short of its target and enabled our lads to go on the prowl again. Kevin Maguire found Baker with a pass as the later sent a dangerous ball across the square. Emmet Nally made the most of this opportunity as he helped the ball into the back of the Killucan net just before the water-break. Baker was unlucky moments after this interval as his goal effort was saved. Killucan then worked the ball from the kickout and sent over another point from play. Sean Fox intercepted a Killucan goal chance as a placed-ball score for the men in yellow reduced the gap to two. The opposition continued to dominate this second quarter as they pulled on a loose ball, hitting the back of the Caulry net on the 24th minute. A further point saw them lead by two. The Caulry forwards struggled to register their scores as some efforts fell short and others fell wide. Colin Murphy got our lads somewhat back on track with his point on the 30th minute but missed chances for our forwards saw us trail 1-5 to 1-4 at the halftime whistle.
Caulry raced out of the tracks in the second half. Murphy combined with McCormack before slotting over a point 20 seconds after the resumption of play. A McCormack free preceded Killucan’s opening score of the half after four minutes. Caulry were patient in attack and this paid dividends on the 35th and 38th minutes respectively in the form of two points. Sean Clinton booted one over thanks to a good mid-field catch from Alan Fitzpatrick before Maguire picked Malynn out with a pass and set him up for a decent score from play. Baker made a major stride forward on the 42nd minute as he found Malynn who riffled the back of the Killucan net. Malynn got the better of the Killucan goalie again on the quarter-hour mark as another goal put Caulry eight points the good. The opposition reduced the margins by one with a converted-free on the 49th minute. However, it was the Caulry lads who were on top as some good play from Nally enabled Murphy to add our fourth goal of the game. Similar to their forward counter-parts, the Caulry defence put in a Trojan-like display in the second half with the Fox brothers and Damien Dolan giving great accounts of themselves. Killucan kicked points either side of a pointed-free from Malynn. Jack Connaughton done well under the opposition’s threat. The men in yellow tried for a goal on the 60th minute as they blasted the ball from a short-range free, but this effort was easily lost amongst a packed Caulry defence. A late free for Killucan meant our lads ran out deserved winners on a scoreline of 4-9 to 1-10.
