Minor A Championship Quarter-Final

Caulry 5-10

St Lomans 3-10

Our minor lads progressed to a semi-final of this year’s Minor A Championship with their victory over St Lomans on Wednesday evening last in the local park.

St Lomans hit the ground running with a fine point from play inside the opening 60 seconds. A point from Sean Clinton drew level. However, the Mullingar men dominated proceedings early in the game as they rattled the back of the Caulry net on the 2^nd minute. The opposition then scored an unanswered 1-1 to leave seven points the margin. Points from Conor McCormack and Jack Bradbury Hughes drew two back. Eoin Shortall and Kevin O’Flaherty defended well as a great pass from McCormack found Emmet Nally who hit the back of the opposition’s net. Further points from McCormack and Matthew Nally meant the sides were level, 1-5 to 2-2, by the quarter-hour mark. The teams exchanged goals, with Jack Bradbury Hughes on target for the homeside. The St Lomans’ goalie denied us a goal as Bradbury Hughes and Emmet Nally settle for points just before the halftime whistle to leave Caulry leading 2-7 to 3-2.

On the resumption, some good combined teamwork from Sean Woods and Sean Clinton enabled Emmet Nally to get his second goal of the evening. St Lomans pointed to reduce the deficit. However, our lads began to push on with Neil Clinton and Sean Fox having superb games in defence. Colin Murphy fielded well as Cialan Dollard added to the scoring tally on the 36^th minute. McCormack sent the ball to the back of the St Lomans net after Caulry were awarded a penalty to leave eight points between the sides. The St Lomans lads worked hard and tapped over two unanswered points to narrow the margins by the 41^st minute. However, our lads proved to be the hungrier side on the evening with another well-taken goal from Woods. Jack Connaughton brought off a great save in goals as scores from Murphy and McCormack allowed our lads to push on. Three late points for the Mullingar boys meant Caulry secured a semi-final spot with the scoreboard reading 5-10 to 3-10 at the fulltime whistle.
