Caulry 1-7

St. Lomans 4-23

A much depleted Caulry U14 side played host to St. Lomans for their latest league game where the visitors ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 4-23 to 1-7.

St. Lomans got off to a good start with an unanswered 0-9 inside the opening 11 minutes. Despite good defending from Aaron Murray and Alan Lynam against a strong opposition, our lads found it hard to register their first score of the game. The St. Lomans boys built up a commanding lead with some more superb points. Ruiari Casey brought off a good save in goals as Alex Grinko defended well. However, the opposition’s attack proved too strong as further scores left Caulry trailing 1-18 to 0-0 at the interval.

The Caulry boys really pulled together as a team in the second half with James Buckley and Senan Baker attacking well. Alan Malynn kicked Caulry’s first score of the game to reduce the deficit. Despite some good work from Casey in goals, the opposition rattled the back of the Caulry net for a second time on the 42^nd minute. However, the Caulry boys showed a never-say-die attitude as a point from Paul Hogan reduced the deficit. The teams traded scores with Malynn on target for Caulry. Tadgh Baker and Harry Stuart Trainor worked well in defence as a goal from Adam Doyle chipped away at the deficit. The Caulry lads worked hard with Malynn and Shane Lawless tapping over two pointed-frees. However, the St. Lomans boys responded well with an unanswered 1-1. Late points from Andrew Stuart Trainor and Malynn meant St. Lomans ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-23 to 1-7.

U12 Blitz

On Saturday our U12's made the trip to Loch Gowna GAA for their annual blitz. Despite the longer than usual journey, 19 players set out on a mission to bring back the first piece of silverware of the season. With 24 teams entered in this very competitive blitz it was not going to be an easy task.

We were drawn in a strong group and started our campaign against the very lively side Colmcille (Longford). Playing into a strong wind it took a few minutes for us to get into our stride and we went into the break with a one point lead. The second period of 8 minutes proved more fruitful and we pulled away to win by 3-2 to 1-0. After a short break we took on the physical side Mullahora (Cavan). Unfortunately our accuracy in front of goal was not up to our usual standards and we went down by 0-3 to 2-4. With one more game to play in the group, we knew a win was a must to progress into the knockout stages of the competition. Fenagh from Leitrim provided the opposition, and as the day hotted up so did the football. Caulry got off to a blistering start and had a commanding 6 point lead at the break, however Fenagh responded to the challenge with a 3 goal blitz at the start of the second half. This was a real test of character for the Caulry lads but with the whole team showing the required never give up attitude, we managed to get the goal and point needed to secure a second place finish in the group.

During the midday break in the football, Caulry were well represented in the crossbar challenge competition, with three players ( Conor Hynes, Cian Lawless and Dylan Kelly McCormack) making it through to the final 10. Considering there were over 300 kids taking part, the three lads should be very proud.

In the quarter final of the Shield competition, we were drawn against a very confident Killmore side from Roscommon who have recently qualified for the Roscommon county final. From the throw in Caulry showed a hunger and energy that could not have been matched by any team. Even in tough conditions we gave an flawless display and Killmore had not response. The 2-6 to 0-1 final score was just rewards for our best performance of the year. Granard from Longford were our semifinal opponents and Caulry were not showing any signs of tiring. Once again we got off to a great start and all players were playing their part with disciplined tackling, blocking and flawless shot selection. Our quick movement of the ball was a pleasure to watch and this result was never in doubt.

The final against Crosserlough (Cavan) was to prove a very tense affair. Playing with a strong wind in the first half our scoring chances were kept to a minimum and we had it all to do going in level at 0-3 a piece. Caulry looked to have taken the initiative mid way through the second half with a brilliant team goal, but to Crosserloughs credit they responded with an equally good goal. This looked to have drained the energy from the Caulry players and we then went two points down. With only seconds left and the ball near our own end line, it looked like it would not be our day. Thankfully that never give up attitude was still alive and the whole team played a part in working the ball up the hill and scored another brilliant team goal that was fitting to win any final. Shortly after, the final whistle blew and the celebrations started. This was a very hard way for Crosserlough to lose a final but the spirit and skill shown by all players on both teams was a credit to the clubs.

Caulry vs. St. Malachys

St. Malachys 1-7

Caulry played host to St. Malachys for their latest Division 2 ACFL fixture on Tuesday evening last.

The opposition raced out of the tracks with a point from play inside the opening 60 seconds. A pointed-free from Conor McCormack levelled proceedings on the 2^nd minute. Caulry were slow to settle with another McCormack free accounting for their second score of the evening. The teams traded scores with Andy O’Sullivan on target for Caulry. A point from Damien Dolan left two points between the sides on the 17^th minute. The Caulry lads worked well as a team as the ball was brilliantly worked up the field by Harry Hughes, Robbie Hickey, James Daly and Alan Daly which resulted in Cialan Dollard rattling the back of the opposition’s net. Alan Fitzpatrick fielded well as Alan Daly added to the scoring tally. A good pass from Hickey found Stephen Connolly who pointed on the 23^rd minute. A late point for St. Malachys left the scoreboard reading 1-6 to 0-3 at the interval.

On the resumption, both sides missed some early scoring opportunities. The opposition soon found their feet with a well-taken goal on the 36^th minute. St. Malachys kicked the next score of the evening to leave just two points the margin. The opposition attacked well and were unlucky to miss some goal scoring opportunities. Despite some good defending from James Pettit, the opposition drew level on the 51^st minute with two unanswered points. Caulry struggled to register a score, with Pettit kicking the homeside’s only point of the second half on the 54^th minute. However, the opposition responded with a point of their own to leave it level pegging at the fulltime whistle on a scoreline of 1-7 apiece.

Caulry played host to The Downs for their final game in this year's Division 2 ACFL where the homeside ran out winners on a scoreline of 0-13 to 2-4.

Caulry were first of the mark with a point from play from Alan Daly on the 2^nd minute. A converted ‘45’ from Stephen Connolly stretched Caulry's lead soon after. However, this lead was shortly lived as The Downs rattled the back of the Caulry net on the 10^th minute. Loughlin Casey defended well as Cialan Dollard drew level with a pointed-free. Caulry kicked the next four scores of the game with James Pettit, Dollard, Ben Kenny and Casey adding to the scoring tally. Alan Fitzpatrick fielded well as the team traded scores. A late goal for The Downs meant Caulry lead by the narrowest of margins at the halftime whistle on a scoreline of 0-9 to 2-2.

Caulry raced out of the tracks in the second half with a point from Daly. The homeside stretched their lead to four points with scores from Daly and Eoghan Grennan. Cillian Nagle brought off a great save in goals as a pointed-free for the opposition reduced the deficit. A point from Fitzpatrick left four points between the sides by the 54^th minute as the opposition struggled to convert chances of their own. A late point for The Downs left three points the margin at the fulltime whistle on a scoreline of 0-13 to 2-4.
